Annual Camp Visit

While my co-workers who had planned to attend with my son and I didn't make it, we had a great camp visit today. Sitting on the hillside to the right of the Noll Field stands, we bonded with a group seated near us. As a group, we drew a chuckle from Coach Tomlin - watching the TE/FB sled blocking drill. The HC was running the drill, exhorting Will Johnson and some others to get after it. When 83 hit the sled, he was rewarded with HEEAATHH! - when Matt Spaeth came next, we decided to shout SPAAEETHH! - Coach T chuckled & pointed at 89, a nice moment. Right down along the fence in front of us was a disabled Vietnam Vet who received a visit and autograph from Mrs. Polamalu (her husband had today off), also a nice moment. We watched a WR vs DB man coverage drill, which greatly favored the WR - AB had the day off, but Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore, Justin Brown and Martavis Bryant all impressed. Wheaton is super-smooth out of his cuts, is sneaky fast with vacuum hands. Moore is a total pro, tight routes, sharp cuts & sure hands. Brown might not be as polished as Wheaton & Moore, but consistantly got open and caught everything. Bryant has a way to go, but his physical skills really stand out. He had the only drop of the 4, but later showed a nasty stiff-arm that may have rattled Isaiah Green's teeth a bit. Among the DB, Shaq Richardson had a nicely timed breakup, and Antwon Blake blanketed Kashif Moore incomplete, and maintained position against C.J. Goodwin for another incompletion. Also worth mentioning is that Ben's passes were accurate and he showed great touch on the fade routes. Other players who impressed: Daniel McCullers - if he does some of the things in pre-season games that he did on the practice field today, he's a lock for the 53. Even when he gets high in his stance, he still gets some push, he's so huge & strong. He batted a pass down with ease late in 11 on 11. Dri Archer - had a sweet end around and bubble screen, he showed nice soft hands all day. Both Le'Veon Bell & Le'Garrette Blount showed great burst, with some dandy interior blocking from Pouncey, DeCastro and Chris Hubbard (ran with the ones since Ramon had the day off). Adam Podlesh might be out of a job that he hasn't yet tried out for - rookie Brad Wing was booming them high & deep the entirety of punting drills. Will Allen made a last-second defensive adjustment that led to a defensive stop - Vet savvy is likely his best chance for a roster spot. Lawrence Timmons looks like he's going to be even better this season, the other 2013 season Pro-Bowl worthy defender Cam Heyward had today off. Cam Thomas is certainly NT-sized, and as big(tall) as Stephon Tuitt is, he looks... Slim. AB and Ike had a little fun playing to the hillside crowd, coaching intern Mike Sellers looks like he could still knock the snot out of somebody. I watched Troy & Joey Porter having a conversation on the far side of the field, lots of smiles followed by a bro hug. Love camp, but can't wait for Saturday night! Worthy
