Steelers vs. Jets Open Gameday Thread

Almost time for the Steelers to take another step in what's turning out to be a special season. For all the success the Steelers have had so far in 2007, they've not been quite the same team on the road. Both our L's have come away from Heinz, and we've yet to notch a signature win.

As always, the keys will be protecting the QB and the football, shore up special teams, and force the opposing QB to beat us. Kellen Clemons will probably get a number of new looks from Dick LeBeau, and I don't think he'll be able to consistently lead his team down the field provided we limit Thomas Jones to minimal production.

If we don't give the Jets any short fields, and not allow Laverneus Coles any big plays, I don't see the Steelers stumbling this week.

Prediction: Steelers 21 - Jets 13

jeez
Very sloppy first half of football. Big Ben was really casual with the ball. More good avoiding pass rushers by him, but very willy nilly with the ball after making the first guy miss.

Thank god for that goal line stand. I wouldn't have liked our chances had they punched it in for 7

ben
glad ben's not forcing things down the field as much, but he's still got to do a better job throwing it away when things break down. Good coverage by the Jets on several of those passes, but you've got to put 2 of the sacks on Ben for holding on too long.

Speaking of which
I'm in the same situation as dcfan there and can't seen this game, but he's been in too many situations where he's had to throw it away this year and not just because of protection.

I don't know if it's the offensive coordinator or what, but I think on too many plays no one is there.

nasty game
we are playing real sloppy today. I'm glad this isn't on TV in the DC area as I'm sure it's uglier on TV than it sounds on the radio.

Our protection is terrible and if we're allowing 4 sacks in a game to the fucking Jets then how are we gonna hang in on Dec. 9??

wtf
SIX sacks. The Jets had 9 total in weeks 1-10. This team has got to be more consistent.

Wow
We didn't deserve that game.  And we got what we deserved.

Where is Cowher
That was embarrassing!!  No discipline, no toughness!!  Are you kidding me....this is NOT Steeler football.

We kneel with 3 seconds left. What are we scared of? Big Ben has the arm strength to throw that ball!! And did the returner really sping the ball for a 15 yard penalty?

And running with a full-back with 3rd and long.
Was that moron "player's coach" not watching the same game?  Did he really believe that this defense was going to stop anyone at the 40 yd line?  When have they stopped a team from getting into field goal range in any game????!!!

I am soooo tired of watching this team under preform  against weaker teams, penalized like a Raider team, show no discipline!!
Where is Cowher!!

It's been a special season...but reality is coming the 2nd half of the season! NO HEART! NO DISCIPLINE!!

Where is your long term memory
#1. Cowher had quite a few stinkers worse than this in his tenure

#2. What do you do when you're given an empty till on your offensive line?

#3. An OT loss on the road in your first season as a head coach is hardly "Throw the bum out" material.

If you didn't expect a learning curve for this guy, or simply forgot there was such a thing on account of us having all in all a great season (ironically) the your glasses need to be taken about 10 shades down from "rose".

Who would usurp the man with? The Charger's head coach? How about the Red Skins?

If heads as hot as yours ruled this franchise we'd be the browns or dolphins.

DISGUSTING!
Why for a team that has so many talented receivers do they continue to run the ball with NO effectiveness?  I think Willy Parker is good but today was NOT his day.  The Steelers offense is SO predictable it makes me sick!  To lose to a 1-8 team and think we have a chance of beating the Pats or being a playoff contention team is an unrealistic goal for this team.  The way we played to day rated pink uniforms, high heel shoes and some make-up.  Maybe we can give the Dolphins their first win of the year!  F Tomlin, he and the O coordinator are WEAK!

The truth hurts
At the risk of pre-empting the venerable DaTruth (sorry DaTruth), here are a few bitter truths about the 2007 Steelers that we have suspected for a while but came clearly to the surface today.
  1. We have no offensive line. All the Houdini stuff Ben's been pulling to this point just didn't work today and frankly didn't work that well last week either (the rushing TD aside). Like last year, it seems that his escapability declines when he is a bit dinged up as he has been the last 2 weeks. Also, either the play calling was awful (pass plays take too long to develop) given the O-line situation or Ben just isn't willing to take the checkdowns. One of these things is going to have to change because the line won't get any better this year. 7 sacks to an NYJ team with 9 in 9 games before this game is ridiculous. What kind of film does O-line coach Larry Zeirlein have these guys watching ?;)
  2. We are not a smashmouth team, period. Get over it Steeler Nation - we are a passing team that needs to bring in an extra tackle (Starks) as a tight end to run the ball. This is a combination of FWP's dancing and the weak O-line that can't run block either. btw, what's wrong with Willie's shoes? I lost count of the number of times he slipped...on field turf, i.e., it wasn't just a Heinz Field problem.
  3. Special teams coverage - our favorite topic. To be fair, they did well till OT and the short kickoffs with good hangtime is a strategy that worked and should be persisted with. The last punt by Sepulveda was a dreadful line drive and that basically exposed our coverage guys again.
One more point - is it just me or is this the second time (Denver game being the first), where our defense tackled poorly on a cold day, especially in the first half - It's time for Tomlin to start practicing with the doors open at the South Side facility.

Overall, though I'm going to give Tomlin a pass on this one. He needs to be judged on overall record and 7-3 is still acceptable. The offensive assistants need to take a lot of fire, especially Arians and pornmeiester Larry Zeirlein.

Let's face it, Super Bowl dreams just aren't realistic this year. I think its time to readjust our sights to winning the division - that could be tricky enough - and then hope for a 2005 like miracle in the playoffs.

At some point you just have to block your man, it wasn't like we were outschemed and there were blitzers running free.  They just blew past, over and through our O-line.
