Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

thing to notice as far as draft

Iv notice a from a few monk drafts why is everyone picking a CB for the steelers first round pick.  some of them even have them also picking a WR in the second round.  Whats up with this, i think we got pretty good CB young and old, and WR we got 2 really good ones with OK back ups in nate washington.

I would of thought that people would of notice the O-line problems and pick up a good o-line, and even possibly picking up a D-Linemen for the future due to the age of the snack.  (ps would it be sweet if somehow the steelers get Glenn Dorsey from LSU, that would be sweet, but very very unlikely) UNLESS, we are willing to trade someone on D with the pats for that second pick (VIA trade from SF).  Would you guys trade someone like a smith or maybe even tayler, or even some of our younger guys to maybe try to get arguably in my opinion the best DT i have ever seen

Draft
I've commented several times that I don't understand why all the 'experts' think the Steelers' biggest need is CB, but almost every single mock I've seen has then taking a CB in the first. WR doesn't seem like a big need but I wouldn't be shocked if they took a tall WR in the second or third. Alot of that thought comes from my belief that Ced won't be back next year though.

Personally I wouldn't trade Ike, or a player of his caliber, to get a college guy just because the NFL ditches are littered with guys who blew everyone away on Saturdays but couldn't get out of their own way on Sundays. I assume you're talking about Anthony Smith and I think it would take more than him to get the 2nd or 3rd overall pick.

yeah
yeah i meant useing smith as a package with other young guys and possibly a later round.  BUt like i said it wouldnt happen.  But then again we need a big boy to fill in for a 3-4 defense and if you look at him omg he is huge and fast

CB vs OL
I think some of the CB projection for the 08 Drarft is a lingering perception from the 07 Draft, when the Steelers might well have taken Revis if he was available and were generally perceived as having CB as a high need position.

Gay's development, Taylor's comeback and solid play by McFadden and Townsend have lessened the immediate need. I've seen OTs Hills (Texas) and Otah (Pittsburgh) as our projected first-round picks and I don't think there is any doubt the Steelers will go in that direction.

The Steelers have often traded up in the first round but rarely (if ever, in my memory) included a starter as part of the trade package. The final rankings for OTs have a long way to go and a lot will depend on Combine results. OT and OL in general is very hard to assess during the season because of team matchups and overall offensive schemes and success. It's quite possible the Steelers will target a specific OT they like more than the others and move up to get him. I'd be surprised if they don't draft another OL, at any of the three positions, in the second or third rounds.

The next priorities in my mind are: DL, FB or power RB, WR, CB.

Power RB
A power RB would be my next priority.  I know the DL is getting a little older now, but we have no power running game at this point.

CB....
is an area where we look very good right now in fact.  of course we'll pick one up in the late, late rounds maybe someone with raw talent who can do kick/punt returns and develop for way down the road.  Ike is a pro bowl caliber player and McFadden/Townsend are solid No. 2's.  Gay looks to be a solid no. 2 in the making.  CB is one of our best positions this year.  If we traded a safety I would trade Clark but that's just me.  he's on the books for cheap given how solid he's been so we'll probably keep our safety rotation intact.  biggest need is overall O-line.  young depth on D-line probably next.  then WR, then just get best players

draft needs
1.O-Line
2.O-Line well we need more than one guy...
3.D-Line
4.Big WR
5.More O-Line for good measure

I'm not a fan of drafting running backs early. They have a short shelf life, but more importantly a good offensive line can make a decent RB look good but it doesn't work the other way around.

there is some truth to that
However, if you look at peterson (from the vikings lol), OMG i think he could be behind the state farm o-line (a bunch of small people, if you seen the ad you know what i mean)

yeah but
a.) He's a special talent, guys like him come around very rarely and are not going to last until when the Steelers pick (hopefully 32nd)
b.) How many games is he going to play compared to a solid O-line guy.

I just see it as a solid offensive lineman is going to play through 3 or 4 feature backs in his career and a good one will make each one of them look better.  Not to mention extending Ben's career if we can keep him from taking so many hits.

Peterson
Peterson is amazing, but I think he's benefited quite a bit from running behind the best run blocking line in the league.  The Vikes have some absolute maulers on that line, and they pay for them.

good point on the OL
AP is awesome but he's kind of like Ben in that he couldn't have gone to a team that was better suited to his strengths. Don't forget that even Chester Taylor averages 4.8 ypc.

take a look
at Jonathan Luigs, center out of Arkansas.  I know that I harp about McFadden and all, but Luigs is a great center.  He just won the Rimington trophy given to the most outstanding center in CF.  I just don't believe in mahan, and luigs should be available in the 2nd round.

underclassmen
Is he a junior? He hasn't filed paperwork the the NFL Advisory Committee. He doesn't have to do that in order to enter the draft but most do.

I agree with you on a lack of trust in Mahan and I really hope they do end up taking a center in the second or third. Most mocks I've seen don't have a center taken at all in the first so the Steelers should have several to choose from in the second.

heh,
yeah, he's a junior, but maybe he is not going early this year.  I just assumed that he would, since most successful juniors do, and the Razorbacks are not going to be very good next year.

I was checking out some fullbacks and noticed that Arkansas' FB, Peyton Hills is rated near the top of the class. He's not big, by FB standards (243 lbs) but do you think he's got some potential?

How about this guy as a power back
I'm not saying to replace FWP but it's obvious we need a battering ram for short yardage and goal line. Well let me introduce you guys to Jehuu Caulcrick (6'0 255lbs) from Michigan State. Depending on which site your looking at he's either listed as a FB or a RB, but either way he carried the ball enough in his senior year to score 21 TD in 12 games. He ended his four year career at MSU with 39 touchdowns and a 4.5 ypc.

And you have to love the first line of his bio:

Jerome Bettis-type running back figures to earn his share of carries in 2007.

Ok maybe I'm getting carried away but this is a guy who we should be able to get with a second day pick. Anyone interested in that?
