The NFL is expected to expand the number of players NFL teams are able to hold on their practice squad from 8 to 10, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
At first glance, this doesn't seem like very groundbreaking news, but if you've been following the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp and preseason, you know the difficult choices the Steelers will have to face when it is time to cut the roster down to 53 by August 30.
Of course, the expansion does't mean anything in terms of the process of players being placed on the practice squad. A player is released, and once that particular player clears waivers, they are able to be signed onto the practice squad.
Obviously, if a player goes onto the waiver wire and another team chooses to pick them up off of waivers, then the original club loses their rights over that player.
This potential expansion is great news for the Steelers. In a year when they have a tremendous amount of youth that could benefit from the NFL's version of a 'red shirt' year, the two additional spots could prove to be extremely valuable.
Players that are potentially looking at a spot on the practice squad if they don't make the 53-man roster are players like Howard Jones, Jordan Zumwalt, Rob Blanchflower, Wesley Johnson, Shaquille Richardson and even Daniel McCullers.
More players could fall into this category, but it just goes to show the amount of talent the Steelers currently have in camp that they don't want to let get away to another NFL organization
As reported, the NFL is expecting this ratification to be completed by next week, in time for the final cut downs before players are released and ultimately before signing practice squad contracts.
