The NFL has been expanding its brand overseas for years now, and commissioner Roger Goodell has shown no interest in slowing down this process as they continue their London series of games in 2015 and look for a possible return South of the United States border by having games in Mexico.
Count the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have play both in Mexico and England since 2000, as a team who wouldn't mind playing more international games. Steelers president Art Rooney II had the following to say to Steelers.com regarding the possibility of more international games:
"We would love to play another game in Mexico at some point," said Rooney, "That part of taking NFL football to another country is something in which we have a keen interest. The Steelers are interested in the other international games as well, and so there's a lot of activity going on. There's a lot of interest in NFL football around the world, and we're just trying to keep developing that."
The Steelers rightfully would be interested in expanding the international series of games as they have one of the largest fan bases globally in the NFL. In 2000 the Steelers played the Indianapolis Colts in Mexico in the preseason, which seems like a perfect fit for international contests as fans in the United States have shown little to no interest in preseason games. Having international games be predominantly preseason games would also avoid the awkwardness which resides around a team having to surrender a home game to play their game on a neutral site.
Like it or not, the NFL is growing beyond the borders of the United States, and the league seems determined to give the fans what they want.
