Could the Khan Artist strike again?

The Pittsburgh Steelers sent shockwaves through the fanbase this week after trading away 2019 third-round wide receiver Diontae Johnson — a foundational piece of the offense over the past five seasons — to the Carolina Panthers in a relatively questionable move. Luckily, those types of moves have been few and far between so far for GM Omar Khan in his short career as the Steelers’ GM, but it’s left fans wondering — who exactly will be catching passes from Russell Wilson this season?

Most moves from the Steelers in free agency have indicated a desire to go “all-in” on the 2024 season, so it’s a natural assumption to believe the Steelers won’t be content with their depth chart essentially starting and ending with third-year wide receiver George Pickens.

Let’s assume the Steelers want to get a little spicy in the wide receiver market after trading away Diontae Johnson and are willing to throw a little money behind the offense. After all, Pittsburgh has ranked bottom-eight in offensive spending dating back to the 2021 season — including having ranked “dead last” in 2022 and 2024 (at least, that’s the case so far through this free agency period.

Who’s the perfect fit for this team?

The Steelers should absolutely be calling about 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk.

Steelers fans are all too familiar with San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk, who gave Pittsburgh a shock to the heart dropping an 8-129-2 stat line on the black and gold in Week 1 of the 2023 season. Wouldn’t it be nice to have that big play potential going to bat for the black and gold for a change?

Though Johnson had his own ups and downs with the Steelers, the one thing Pittsburgh lost by trading him away is his refinement as a route runner. Aiyuk is a player who could compensate for that loss ten-fold, having ranked in the 86th percentile among wide receivers over the past two seasons in separation percentage against single coverage, per PFF.

Brandon Aiyuk ROUTED Diggs

(via @NFL)pic.twitter.com/c864jag5C1
— NFL on ESPN (@ESPNNFL) January 17, 2022

Aiyuk won’t be the contested catch aficionado that Pickens is (though he’s more than capable of it), but what he brings is finesse and stability, with plenty of jaw-dropping plays in between to boot. Over the past two seasons, Aiyuk has ranked second among all wide receivers with a 90.7 PFF receiving grade while ranking in the 64th+ percentile among wideouts in yards after the catch per reception (4.7), yards per route run (2.21), drop rate (4.3%) and average depth of target (12.8).

The 49ers shouldn’t necessarily be looking to move on from Aiyuk at this point, who they drafted with the 25th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, as Aiyuk enters 2024 set to play on the fifth-year option, he’s made it clear that he’s looking for a long-term extension — one the 49ers aren’t necessarily looking to give him at this point. The Steelers would likely need to send their 2024 first-round pick (20th overall) to the Niners to get the deal done, while also being willing to offer him a long-term deal. Those two factors might make the proposition of the trade less likely, even if Aiyuk would fit the bill of WR1 for the years to come.

By trading Aiyuk this offseason, the 49ers can save $14.124 million against the cap, while also ridding themselves of the potential headache Aiyuk could pose in the instance he decides to skip out on training camp while he still hammers the table to get a long-term deal done.

All things considered, the Steelers should absolutely be calling to inquire, at the very least.

Some major shakeups in Pittsburgh since the start of free agency...

What a week it’s been for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Everyone was prepared for a quarterback battle to begin the week between Russell Wilson and Kenny Pickett. First, receiver Diontae Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Then came Friday afternoon March 15, 2024, and Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles to be the new clipboard holder for the Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The Steelers thought they found their next quarterback. Boy, were they wrong.

The Steelers selected Pickett in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and the fan base assumed the team had found its next franchise quarterback. Excitement was high, and he finally got in the starting lineup and away we went. There were multiple fourth-quarter comebacks and plenty of exciting moments. Underneath it all though, the statistics were terrible.

Pickett didn't like being the backup quarterback. One could argue that he could have squashed the Steelers interest in any other quarterback by settling it on the field, but unfortunately, he failed this city, throwing just 13 total touchdowns over 25 career starts.

Granted, Steelers Nation was spoiled by having a franchise quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger for almost two decades. Going from such a high level of quarterback play, seeing the team reach three Super Bowls (and winning two of them) had the standard for play from the quarterback was rightfully set very high.

Then came the quote-unquote benching for now Tennessee Titans quarterback Mason Rudolph during the end of last season. Now Wilson has signed with the team, and that was Pickett's final straw that broke the proverbial camel's back. As the popular saying goes, "Bye, Felicia." He was traded away, the Steelers will now move forward with Russell Wilson in the starting position.

After Wilson’s signing, the door looked closed for a trade to send Chicago Bears quarterback to Pittsburgh... but the Khan artist struck again. The Steelers quarterbacks room went from looking abysmal with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph atop the depth chart to suddenly looking the brightest it's been for some time now.

The Steelers trade for Justin Fields is perfect for him. He gets to sit and learn from Wilson for a season, and the Steelers can go from there.

Now, after the additions of Wilson and Fields, the Steelers also don't have to use precious draft capital in 2024 to draft a quarterback, especially when the options aren't great after USC quarterback Caleb Williams and UNC’s Drake Maye are off the board.

They learned their lesson with Pickett about drafting a lesser talent and over-projecting their future in the NFL. Wilson is the perfect mentor for Fields, their play style is very similar. For the first time in their history, the Steelers have an actual quarterback succession plan, well done. That doesn’t mean they don’t still have some holes to fill approaching the 2024 NFL Draft, however

Next up: Steelers should sign FA WR Tyler Boyd (Cincinnati Bengals)

The Steelers and receiver Tyler Boyd it makes just too much sense not to happen. It's a perfect match, with his toughness and playing style fitting exactly what the Steelers want on offense, what they want their receivers to do, and how they want them to be as teammates.

A two-year $17 million contract would make sense for both sides and is in line with what has happened during the free agency period with other receivers. It would also allow the Steelers to keep the first-year cap hit lower.

The newest Steelers’ defensive back re-works contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired cornerback Donte Jackson from the Carolina Panthers in the deal that sent wide receiver Diontae Johnson to Carolina.

According to Over the Cap, Jackson’s new deal takes his salary down from north of $10 million to $6 million with a $4.75 million signing bonus.

The move frees up more cap space for the Steelers to continue to be active as free agency treks on. They have already been arguably the most active team in the NFL when it comes to signings and trades. Pittsburgh has already inked linebacker Patrick Queen to the largest external free agent deal in team history. They’ve also signed quarterback Russell Wilson and safety DeShon Elliott, and made another splash by trading for quarterback Justin Fields.

Pittsburgh is also scheduled to meet with free agent wide receiver Mike Williams. Williams does have a connection with the Steelers, as new quarterbacks coach Tom Arth was the Chargers’ pass game specialist from 2022-23. There hasn’t been a dull moment this offseason with the Steelers, and more moves are almost certainly coming.

Barton could be the most overlooked prospect for Pittsburgh at pick 20.

Approaching the 2024 NFL Draft, we’ll be scouting as many of the top prospects that the Pittsburgh Steelers could have their eye on anywhere from Rounds 1 through 7. We’ll breakdown the prospects themselves, strengths and weaknesses, projected draft capital and their fit with the Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have added many key free agents so far this offseason, including QB Russell Wilson, ILB Patrick Queen — and even a new punter, Cameron Johnston. A position they have yet to address is center. Following the release of Mason Cole, it was assumed by many that the black and gold would address the position in some capacity before the NFL Draft. Because that hasn’t happened, it’s easy to connect the dots and draw the conclusion that the Steelers will be in the market for a center early in the draft.

We’ve heard so much about Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson and West Virginia’s Zach Frazier - but Graham Barton is a player who has a first-round pedigree and could potentially be in play. Barton started his career at Duke as a center but eventually was moved to left tackle, which is arguably the most important position on an offensive line. There have been many questions surrounding his ability to play center, but he wasn’t moved because of any struggles - it was simply because he was the best lineman at Duke, so he played the most critical position. Let’s dive into some of Barton’s tape.

The basics on Graham Barton

Postion: Center

Class: Senior

Size: 6’5, 314 pounds

Age: 22 years old

Projected draft round: Late Round 1, Early Round 2

Graham Barton scouting report

Barton shows off his athleticism and mean streak below and pancakes a few Florida State Seminoles to help open a lane for his running back to scamper for a touchdown. We talk a lot about a defender’s “get off” as opposed to an o-lineman but look how quickly Barton fires off the line of scrimmage here. And keep an eye on the celebration at the end. The dude was FIRED up!

This tape against Florida State is telling because he’s playing against EDGE Jared Verse, who is considered by most a top 15 player in this NFL Draft class. On this play, Barton loses the rep to Verse, who pushes him back towards the quarterback forcing him to scramble out of the pocket. This is likely why Barton isn’t going to play left-tackle at the next level. Fortunately, he won’t be going against guys like Verse as an interior lineman.

Barton consistently went against top-notch competition playing in the ACC, and his tape against a strong Clemson front is outstanding. He puts the EDGE on his back here on another breakfast rep and allows his QB Riley Leonard a clear lane to pick up a nice chunk of yards on the ground.

Because he’s likely to play center, we’re probably more likely to get an understanding of how he will fit at the next level by watching plays where he’s leading the charge for the ground game. Here, he shows his athleticism and ability to pull, paving the way for a solid gain on first down. He’d be a welcomed presence on an Arthur Smith-led offense in front of backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren — an offense that will prioritize the ground and pound.

Graham Barton’s fit with the Steelers

There is a very obvious elephant in the room here; can Barton come in from day one and be your starting center after not playing the position for a few years? During the Mason Cole era our eyes were consistently bleeding due to poor snaps that led to broken plays. There is not much tape of Barton snapping the football. But I’m not overly worried. He’s being touted by most experts as a center, and given his dominance in college, I’m confident he can play any of the three interior line positions at a high level.

He should be on Pittsburgh’s radar at 20 and is probably the second-best center in the draft behind Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson.

Round 3, pick 84: Xavier Legette, WR, South Carolina

The Steelers could still bring in veteran Tyler Boyd, and also recently signed receiver Van Jefferson in free agency. They still have holes to fill, however, and it’s highly unlikely they won’t draft one with such a good class. At 6’1, 221 pounds, South Carolina wideout Xavier Legette would give them solid option lining up opposite George Pickens after a breakout season in 2023. They have to surround their quarterback with a solid receiver core.

Round 3, pick 98: Mason Smith, DE, LSU

You can’t say enough good things about veteran DT Cam Heyward, on and off the field. But, there is only so much gas left in the tank once a player reaches their mid-thirties. Playing such a physically demanding position as he has done for this long, the end is much closer than you might think.

The best thing for the Steelers future is to have the next man up, ready to go whenever that time comes. Smith is athletic, he fits the Steelers ideal defensive end type perfectly. He should be able to smoothly slide in behind Heyward and Larry Ogunjobi giving them rest during games. That could really benefit the defense when it comes time for the playoffs, as the defensive line would be well-rested and ready to go.

Round 4, Pick 119: Khyree Jackson, CB, Oregon

The Steelers traded for Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson. However, they need to continue adding speed and athleticism to their cornerback room. The AFC is loaded with very talented receivers, and this draft class will only add more. In order to reach their ultimate goals in not only reaching the playoffs, but making some noise they are going to have to be able to cover those receivers. Joey Porter Jr. was an excellent start, now they continue here to surround him with talented teammates.

Jackson is a continuation of the teams move towards taller, long armed cornerbacks who are able to use their length to disrupt receivers.

Round 6, No. 178: Tommy Eichenberg, ILB, OSU

Patrick Queen was a superb addition by the Steelers in free agency. While Elandon Roberts and Queen should make for a fine pairing in 2024, the future at the position aside Queen is up in the air. Cole Holcomb doesn’t seem like he’ll be ready to start the season, and that has to call his future into question. Will he return to his pre-injury form? What happens to he and Roberts in 2025?

Well, there’s no time like the present to begin preparing for the future after those two. Tommy Eichenberg should be able to be a very good understudy to Roberts and possibly supplant him next season, while also insulating the team against Holcomb not returning to form.

Round 6, No. 195: Nehemiah Pritchett, CB, Auburn

The 2024 NFL Draft has a solid cornerback class, so the Steelers decide to double dip at the position with Pritchett. Cincinnati Bengals receiver Jamarr Chase is a stud, so is quarterback Joe Burrow. Baltimore Ravens receiver Zay Flowers looks like a problem, the Cleveland Browns have receiver Amari Cooper and just traded for Jerry Jeudy. The coverage in the Steelers secondary has to be better, and they decide to fight fire with fire here.
