Whis You Were Here

Whis is gone. ESPN is reporting that the Arizona Cardinals have hired Ken Whisenhunt to be their new head coach. Whisenhunt, who's been Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator since 2004, signed a five year deal to take over in Phoenix.

Tough to see Whis go, but we probably shouldn't be surprised. After all, the Rooneys went outside the ranks to hire Bill Cowher when Chuck Knoll retired. Unless the Rooneys hand things over to Russ Grimm, in all likelihood the Rooneys will be bringing in some new blood again.

Stay tuned.

Whis is smart
Why not go to Arizona hes an offensive coordinator and all that team has is offense. Its the perfect fit for him 3 good wideouts stud RB and QB. Its an O-coordinators dream job

I'm praying . . .
For Cam Cameron or Norm Chow.

We need a new offensive coordinator and head coach, so kill two birds with one stone.

Grimm no brainer
I grew up in Pittsburgh and moved to AZ a couple of years ago. I am a diehard, cannot sleep before gameday, lifelong Steeler fan. When I heard Whisenhunt was coming out to AZ I nearly fell off my chair. The Bidwell's are clueless but have made a decision which will immediately make the Cards playoff contenders. With that being said, the Rooney's would never hold Whisenhunt out hanging in the wind, so I believe they told him he was out but they were not ready to announce Grimm as the head coach due to their respect for the NFL and distracting from the playoffs.  The Bidwell's could care less, they announced. Why would the Rooney's ever in a million years, go with someone outside the Steeler's family one year removed from a Super Bowl win.  The only thing keeping the Steelers from making the playoffs tjis year was a little effort from Cowher.  Cowher was outcoached three games this year, which would have made us 11-5 (1st Cincy game, Atlanta and Jacksonville) but that is for a different discussion. Grimm is the only logical choice.

Perhaps
But I'm not so sure that the Rooneys aren't headed OUTSIDE the organization... They did it with Cowher. Why not this time?

The fact is that THIS year's coaching staff got complacent. It might be that THIS staff, on the heels of a Super Bowl, might need a new injection of life. That was the rationale that brought Cowher in; who's to say it won't be the impetus behind this yearr's decision, too?

Now, if it's Grimm, I won't blink, but, I ask you this AZSteeler. Your logic is damn sound, and plausible, but... if Grimm's the guy, what's the hesitation on announcing it? If the team knew it was Grimm and not Whis, and that's how he knew to accept the Cardinals job, wouldn't the team have announced Russ by now? Why wait?

I'm good with the team announcing Grimm as Cowher's replacement. My thought is, though: the longer we don't hear anything, the less I think it'll be Grimm.

Why not Rivera
Why not put Rivera in his defense was dominant before Tommie Harris got hurt a great DT and thats what we have in hampton. Hes a defensive minded coach just like the rooneys like. I don't think they'll bring in grimm because the past two times the rooneys have needed a coach they went out of house defensived minded coaches

Grimm
Both points well taken.  Why wait to announce Grimm, especially now with Whisenhunt in AZ and just salivating to dive into that Steeler coaching core.  If Grimm is not the choice, Whisenhunt starts hiring whomever the new coach starts firing.  Whisenhunt just fired Kruczek and the Cards Defensive line coach, whomever that was and word in AZ is he is eyeing up Steeler staff.  Whisenhunt is really making an impression fast. He is all over radio and TV down here - he's already a rock star. Now as for history, Noll's hiring was way before my time but when they hired Cowher it was alot different. I was freaking out then like I am now.  Steelers had a trillion bad drafts in a row, Rienstra, Worley, Hastings, etc... and the organization was ready for a change.  I think Dave Wannstedt would have been just as successful but Cowher was the choice. Both Dave and Bill were both Pittsburgh guys so I was OK with either one.  I think Timlin is just a crazy choice and a huge risk. I guess they are waiting to interview Rivera a 2nd time before the decision is made.  He must have made a good impression.  If there is a god, please make the Bears lose so we can get this over with, get Grimm in place and drive Whisenhunt to Carolina to decimate their coaching staff not ours. Grimm will keep everything as is, find himself an offensive cooridinator, get Lebeau to start grooming someone to take over for him when he is ready to retire and keep Ben from throwing the ball more than 25 times a game.
