Not All Went Wrong For Steelers In Sunday's Loss To Jets

We've been over the negatives - of which there were many - from Sunday's embarassing loss to the Jets. Well, the news doesn't get any better just yet. If we're to play better next Monday night, we'll have to do it without Santonio Holmes and Troy Polamalu, both of whom are listed as doubtful.

Despite the shoddy, uninspired play and poor execution on offense, there was cerintaly one big positive to take away from Sunday's game: the goal line defense.

Goal Line Stand #1:

As the 2-minute warning of the first half approached, the Jets took over at the Pittsburgh 49 yard line after picking off Ben Roethlisberger. Armed with three timeouts, the 2:00 warning, and a short field to work with, not to mention a 10-7 lead, the Jets were sitting pretty to pad their lead heading into half time. Just a few plays later, Thomas Jones made Polamalu whiff, then bounced off another would-be tackler before finally being brought down at the two by Anthony Smith.

1st and 2 from the Pittsburgh 2: Thomas Jones is stuffed by Farrior and Harrison.

2nd and 2 from Pittsburgh 2: Kellen Clemons fumbles into the endzone as he scrambled to the right pylon. The ball took a Steelers bounce and stayed in bounds long enough to pass over the goal-line before tumbling out. Touchback! Wait, defensive holding. Half the distance and automatic first down. So much for holding them to a FG I assumed.

1st and goal from Pittsburgh 1: Thomas Jones took it behind his right guard and tried to elevate over the goal line for the score. Denied by Tyrone Carter and Clark Haggans for no gain, and the Jets have to use their final timeout. Now the Jets have no choice but to throw it, lest they risk running out of time if a running play failed.

2nd and goal from Pittsburgh 1: Incomplete pass on a terrible play call (I hate the fade pattern unless you're throwing to Randy Moss, Plaxico, etc. Certainly not to Brad Smith, a former college QB).

3rd and goal from Pittsburgh 1: With just seconds left, the Jets are forced to kick a FG, and the Steelers stay within a mere 6 points of the Jets despite playing one of their worst halves of football all year.

5 plays from inside the 2 yard line and we stand strong. Very, very impressive.

Despite poor tackling for most of the day, the Steelers D buckled down around the goal line

Goal Line Stand #2:

Granted, this was not really a goal-line stand like the one made in the first half, and it was pathetic that the Jets even gotten into position in the first place, but I was still proud of the fact that the D finally buckled down on the Jets last drive and held them to a game-tying FG. I should also note that the Jets bungled this one a bit, so even less praise should be directed the Steelers way. Still, they made the one play they needed to to keep the Jets out of the endzone (although if you analyze the above picture, you'll quickly notice Brad Smith should have made that catch to end the game in regulation). Nevertheless, the Jets had the ball at the Steelers 5 with 37 seconds remaining and one final timeout. After spiking the ball to stop the clock, the Jets were inexcusably penalized 5 yards on a Delay of Game penalty, sending them back to the 10, where it's harder to pull off a successful running play.

Honestly, as happy as I was to see us finally get after the Jets on those two handfulls of plays, it was disappointing that it took us that long to A) play with any edge and toughness on D and B) bring maximum pressure at Clemens that final drive.

Most self-respecting football fans despise the prevent defense in the 2-minute situation. It just doesn't work, especially in the pros where QB and WR can throw the quick stuff to the sidelines in their sleep. You gotta force a young'n like Clemens to make quick decisions even at the risk of giving up a big play.

An up-and-down day for the defense, but the goal-line stand in the first half was most certainly one of the few things we can look back at favorably.

some positives
I agree blitz, there was SOME good football played Sunday, especially by the defense. But, in fairness, I would not include your goal line stand No. 2. The Jets marched the field needing a field goal and should have scored a TD on the dropped end zone pass to Smith.

The other goal line stand was fine but, again, you have to be critical of Haggans for a blatant hold of a receiver who might otherwise have been in position to make a catch from Clemens. If he doesn't hold, it's quite possible Clemens tries a pass to the TE rather than continue running to the sidelines.

The defense got its act together for much of the second half. They forced three fourth-quarter turnovers, two on downs and one on the INT by Townsend. They also forced a quick punt on the first series of OT.

Those three turnovers were not taken advantage of by the offense, especially the possession immediately after Townsend's pick. This was a win-able game despite a lacklustre effort.

But in all three areas, mostly on offense but also including defense and the last punt by Sepulveda, there were too many mistakes. I don't care what the score was, there were too many poor plays on both sides of the ball. Maybe losing a game based on poor overall play by Steeler standards, rather than eking out a win despite poor play, will be a more effective wakeup call for everyone on the team .

haggans hold
I dont think it was a bad call, but it was borderline. You almost always see contact there and Haggans in no way took him down. I have no problem with that play there other than the fact that he wasnt aware he had help behind him and had no reason to do more than give a bump to the receiver.

hehe
As for your assesment that the second scenario hardly constitutes a goal line stand, I agree. A bigtime stretch, but I think I hinted as much ni the post :)

I'm done with this game. Time to move on, I just wanted to end with something somewhat positive given how much time was spent on the negatives.

i am
assuming that you meant most fans 'despise' the prevent and if thats what you meant, man you could not be closer to the truth.  I do not understand why teams that are playing well on defense all game suddenly switch to a prevent and the opponent drives down the field.  Why???  It happens every f***ing game!  I get really pissed and again, as in our earlier losses(and a few of our wins) the opposing stagnant offense drives down the field to tie or win the game.  The jets had 160 yds in the air, and 56 of that was on the flea ficker.  Their offense was not doing that great.  Stop the prevent.  Please.

I just meant to point out that I hate the prevent, not your typo. :)

Queston for steelerark
Hey, I know this completely off topic.  Steelerark, do you have any info on what's going on with Houston Nutt?  Wolfpack fans are hoping Arkansas takes Butch Davis from UNC, and I'm kind of curious if you know anything.

haha
thats funny that you say that, because his name has definitely been thrown around.  The problem is that Nutt is in good with the admin, so it might be tough to get him out of here.  Also, I have heard a lot about Butch being considered for A&M, so I think you have a good shot at ggetting your wish.  I personally do not want him anywhere near here, not because I think he's a bad coach.  On the contrary, I think he's a great recruiter, but I just can't stand him.   On my list of hated sports teams it pretty much goes like this:
  1. Patriots
  2. Ravens
  3. Braves/Cowboys
  4. Bengals/Browns
  5. Any Florida college football team
Honorable mentions - Notre Dame, Ohio St., Michigan, Seahawks, Yankees, USC, S.F. Giants

I hated Butch at Miami, and then Cleveland, so it has lingered.

heh,
can you tell I'm a PSU, Steelers, Pirates fan?  hehe

Oh and I forgot the Flyers, Rangers, Capitals and Devils in the NHL.

Davis
Well, it looks like he may have pulled his name out of the mix, anyway.  I read that he just got an extension and a raise at UNC.  Of course, I'm sure an SEC school could pay him more than UNC, even still, but we'll have to see.

Anyway, congrats on the big win over LSU.

Don't hate him yet
Also, I can't say I hate him yet.  I never cared what he did at Miami, especially since he left before they won any championships, and the Steelers beat him enough at Cleveland that I didn't build up any hatred there either.

friggin prevent
So frustrating. Nothing befuddles me more. Have coaches not seen the tape a billion times of it failing?
