Datruth's Post-Game Steelers-Pats Thoughts
Datruth4life's post-game thoughts - removed from the comments section of previous post
- The game was 3-0 after the Steelers first drive and the DaTruth kind of felt like the game was close to being over right there. Why? Because kicking field goals ain't gonna beat this team.
- Are the big bad Patriots beatable? Sure. You just need an offense that can put 35 points on the board, a defense that will pressure and hit Brady (not necessarily sack him), corners that can play press coverage, and safeties that play two-deep and never let a Patriots receiver get behind them in coverage, and a strong running game to punish that slow front seven.
- Will they be beat? Not during the regular season. However, in the playoffs Indy or the Cowboys could take them out.
- Anthony Smith picked a bad time to play his worst game as a Steeler. I'm sure LeBeau told him to not let a Patriots receiver get behind him, like they did the Bengals this year. I mentioned it earlier this year, but now you guys really know why Ryan Clark started ahead of Smith and why Smith still would be on the bench if Clark was healthy. Clark plays the defense that is called and is always where he is supposed to be.
- Speaking of safeties, would it have been a different game if a healthy Troy were playing? I don't know. DaTruth thinks that a healthy Ryan Clark probably would have had a bigger impact on the game than Palomula. Palomula would have been as agressive as Smith and T. Carter on both of those play actions. Ryan Clark would have stayed back and played the D that LeBeau called.
- It was painful watching Colon struggle with Vrabel. It reminded me of what I hope to see next year with Lamar Woodley coming off the corner in Haggans spot next year. By the way, has anyone seen Haggans during the last 4 or 5 weeks? Haggans won't be on this team next year. Might as well get Woodley a few more snaps starting now to get him ready for his big debut next year.
- If Santonio Holmes is hurting and can't be Santonio, then shut him down. He's a little like Troy. I'd rather have a 100 percent and hungry Willie Reid on the field than a limping Santonio Holmes. Nate Washington did nothing yesterday to help his football.
- Big Ben played a pretty good game yesterday. If he would have had some help, he was dialed in to do some things. The running game had a pulse and Najeh made some big plays. Still, this OL isn't consistent enough to protect Ben. That and special teams will be the undoing of this team in the playoffs.
- Know why Ike will probably never see a Pro Bowl? Because a CB that takes the trip across the water would have made that interception that Moss made over him on their first touchdown drive. Ike just doesn't make that play. One of the DaTruth's big matchups to watch for this game was B. McFadden on Stallworth, since he'd be the only DB to primarily have one-on-one coverage. McFadden did a nice job on Stallworth but the rest of the DB's didn't show up.
- That 4th down call to Hines wasn't one of Arians better moments. Right when he went into motion, DaTruth said to himself, I hope that isn't what I think it is. Turns out it was. What happened to Miller and Spaeth near the goal line? Or Najeh? If they're lost, then Arians need to find them.
- I thought we might see Starks in for a series against Colon, but Tomlin is showing that he doesn't like to replace starters in game, even if they are struggling. He's let K. Simmons struggle though the entire year without pulling him, continued to feed Willie after fumbling 4 times against the Bungles and didn't pull Colon yesterday when he was making Vrable look like LT.
- When is the last time you saw a Steelers team more deflated than after the Pats hit them with that throwback from Moss to Brady, and then Brady to Gaffney? Probably not since Ricardo Coclough dropped that punt against the Bengals during last season. DaTruth was there for that game and it was game, set, match just like it was yesterday.
A little something from Peter King as far as salary cap room next year:
So you want to know how active your team will be with a good free-agency market coming up in three months? Here's a chart of how much cap space each team was due to have next spring as of Saturday, along with how many players each team has under contract:
Team Signed Players 2008 cap room
1.Tennessee 39 $40.85 million
2.San Diego 44 $33.03 million
3.Jacksonville 43 $32.69 million
4.Buffalo 49 $32.05 million
5.New Orleans 39 $31.69 million
6.Cincinnati 48 $31.45 million
7.San Francisco 48 $30.91 million
8.Cleveland 42 $30.31 million
9.Arizona 34 $30.27 million
10.N.Y. Jets 45 $27.72 million
11.Oakland 40 $25.98 million
12.Tampa Bay 48 $25.90 million
13.Miami 48 $25.56 million
14.N.Y. Giants 49 $24.47 million
15.Detroit 42 $23.50 million
16.Houston 43 $22.91 million
17.Dallas 40 $20.61 million
18.Kansas City 44 $20.27 million
19.Chicago 52 $19.80 million
20.Pittsburgh 43 $18.61 million
21.Green Bay 48 $18.37 million
22.Philadelphia 49 $17.17 million
23.Denver 49 $16.77 million
24.Minnesota 49 $14.88 million
25.New England 41 $10.93 million
26.St. Louis 45 $9.61 million
27.Seattle 44 $9.55 million
28.Indianapolis 48 $8.49 million
29.Carolina 35 $6.05 million
30.Atlanta 52 $5.79 million*
31.Baltimore 42 $5.00 million
32.Washington 45 -$20.72 million
The Steelers will be over $20M+ in cap room after they release Cedric Wilson. His $2M plus salary next isn't going to fly for a 3rd WR on this team. Willie Reid needs to be active on game days. Nate Washington will probably be back but even he could be beat out if someone more consistent is available.
The 3 biggest offseason priorities for this team is 1. Dump a load of money on Ben 2. Resign B. McFadden 3. Fix that OL, whether it means drafting 2 OL, resigning Starks and moving Colon inside or signing a free agent tackle. A QB like Ben comes along once every 20 years for a franchise. They have to do everything in their power to protect that asset and give him the weapons to be successful.
If the Steelers don't come to play, the Jaguars could smack them. Tomlin should have their attention this week. That's my guarantee, A.Smith-style.
Be blessed, Steelers Nation.

Couple of notes...
Also from your post: "Will they be beat? Not during the regular season. However, in the playoffs Indy or the Cowboys could take them out." You mean the same Cowboys who the Pats beat by 3 TD's in Dallas? And the same Indy team they beat in Indy by dropping 14pts on their ass in an 8 minutes stretch in the 4th qtr?
Those teams? Oh, ok.
Finally: "A QB like Ben comes along once every 20 years for a franchise. They have to do everything in their power to protect that asset and give him the weapons to be successful." I was going to make some Ben jokes, but then I realized... after Brady, Manning and Romo, he probably is the best of incredibly bad group of QB's in this league. Sign him up!!

Notes...
But, N.E. will have to beat either the Steelers or the Colts (both for a second time) to get there. As a Steeler fan I can only hope that we don't run into the Patriots until the AFC Championship game, hopefully we'll draw the Colts after we beat a wild card team.
I would relish a rematch with the Pats, maybe on a real windy day where the running game might matter most.

Easy now...
And Big Ben is one of the top 5 quarterbacks right now, and that's nothing to shake a stick at no matter what the total quality of QB play is in the league. Look at that top five (in my humble opinion)
Brady
Manning
Roeth (probably my bias puts him here)
Favre
Romo
So yes, he is special, not just now, but has the promise to continue to be one of the greats in history if he continues playing at the level he has in his first 3 years.

Lovely
Keep the good commentary coming, Steeler fans. The Patriots had the better team yesterday; nice to know that their fans aren't as smart as their coach.
What a joke.
Too Tru Datruth
And your thoughts about the OL is spot on, too. Good word!

Patriot Nation
As a football fan...
well
Point is, with both of them, you have to do what it takes to A) keep them in your city and B) surround them with talent. The Pats tried to forge ahead without B, and damn near almost got away with it. But now that he has an arsenal of weapons, theres no stopping that offense.
It may sound like a hyperbolic statement on the surface, but think around the league: there's an awful lot of Trent Edwards, JP Lohsman, Kyle Boller, Clemons, Cleo Lemon, AJ Feely, the McCown brothers, Damon Huard, Rex Grossman, David Carr, Harrington, etc. etc. etc. The list is endless when it comes to just so-so, if not downright terrible, QBs.
Good stuff as usual datruth.
Question about Haggans: he seems a bit undersized to me. Why were you so high on resigning him yet no longer after this stretch of poor play? He was playing INCREDIBLE football to start the year, but has really faded. Theories?
Us Steelers fans couldnt be happier with Ben's development this year.
Response to Pats comment, Haggans question
Losing Dwight Freeney was a big blow to the Colts, but with a healthy Marvin Harrison and Peyton being Peyton, I don't think the game is a gimme, even in Foxboro.
Dallas matches up pretty well with New England, prior aarrss-whipping notwithstanding. Romo can make plays, their passing game can challenge that secondary, their D can pressure Brady and that OL can open holes for Marion Barber. Dallas' biggest concern for that game would be the play of its safeties.
I think it helps that both of these teams have played them this year so they know what they're up against.
Blitzburg, as far as Haggans is concerned, he would be no. 4 on my list as far as free agents, behind Ben, McFadden and Starks. He'd be nice to have but I think I'd want Woodley starting next year.
Woodley gives you the capability to have 10 sacks or more from that LOLB position next year and adds more youth to your D. It's time to get McFadden in there as a starter next year to.
Woodley and James Harrison as your bookend OLBs next year gives this D 20+ sack potential at the most important position in the 3-4. With Haggans turning 30, I don't think he's all of a sudden going to flip the switch and become a pass-rushing terror again. Right now, Haggans is just another guy.
Besides, any free money that this team has after signing Ben, McFadden and the draft picks need to go to fixing that OL.
Your thoughts, Steelers Nation?
Don't forget either
Dallas
Dallas may get to the SB, they may not. They will certainly not win it.
The Colts, if they make it to Foxboro for the AFCCG, will not offer much resistance to the New England Patriots. One can hope for Indy to get healthy and for N.E. to lose a couple more guys but as it stands now, the Patriots are a lock for the SB.

yea
As for Starks, are we really going to re-sign him if he keeps getting bumped by Colon in the starting lineup? Someone's going to offer more than what we'd pay, no?
doubt either will be back
quick question

San Fran
Good call on the Haggans thing... He's playing well, but can be replaced and that is what the Steelers love to do at linebacker. There's been many times when I've regretted the loss of an amazing linebacker just to have someone fill the slot the next year.
As to the line... If I were a betting man I'd see the Steelers, draft a center and tackle and bring back Starks. Move mahan and colon to guards, let starks compete with the rookie. Mahan does not have the skills to play center.

Chuck Noll used to say
Take away the cheap NE scores and add Pittsburgh red zone efficiency and it doesn't look nearly so bad. Patriots may eventually win out and be viewed as legendary, but to my mind that is more about media hype and an indictment on the quality of play from the rest of the league. They have a virtually nonexistent running game and a very ordinary defense. What truly sets them apart are their tactical adjustments. They are smart enough, and humble enough to take what the opponent gives them. The fourth quarter drive was a thing of beauty. Quick short passes that neutralized the blitz and made the deep coverage irrelevant.
By contrast Arians seems to be a bit too clever from time to time. Nijah was successful in short yardage in several situations earlier in the game, but he's nowhere to be seen on the goal line in the 4th quarter.
It'll be interesting to see how Smith responds. He humiliated himself. This will either make him a much better player(and man) or it will break him.
I'm forced to agree with the Datruth; I value Starks more than Haggans at this point. I guess I'm part of a minority that thought that replacing Max with Colon was a mistake, though I like Willie and agree that we needed to get him on the field somehow. But watching him being constantly, consistently being beaten on the outside rush just makes me wonder why everybody doesn't do this all the time against him. Starks has some mobility issues given his size, but he's a much better player than I think he gets credit for. Haggans, though still a good player is slowing down and will probably give way to Woodley. The economics say next year.
If the story ended today I would bet that we would be looking at a new OL and special teams coach next year as well. I'd prefer to leave the jury out on several players (Taylor,Timmons, Washington, etc.)until Tomlin completea his evaluation of his first year. My guess is he may be a bit more forgiving than some of our fan base.
