Playoff Time: Steelers vs. Jaguars Open Thread
Showtime.
I've seen a pretty impressive performance from Seattle for most of this opening game. The crowd's been a big part of that. We're going to need that same sort of effect from the faithful at Heinz Field.
Do your part from around the country as well.
Do or die. Win or go home.
Go Steelers!

Overall Coaching when including Special Teams: D+
Overall Player Effort: A
Overall Player Execution: B
In the end, the play calling in the "4 minute offense" was passive and predictable. This in large part doomed the Steelers at the most critical point in the game. Preparation and aggression really showed on the 3rd and 6 play call. Jax had 2 defenders attacking Ben with Essex trying to seal the edge. Ben tried to cut back under Essex to no avail. Even if Ben gets to the edge he probably is tackled short by the safety. Nobody playing back for the Jags. Contrast this to the 4th and 2 play for the game and the Steelers looked ridiculous. As a long time defensive coach, I just don't get how that QB draw goes for 30 yards in the NFL - it seems absolutely unfathomable. The light in the ass defense got shoved (and held, but what else is new in TV football?)beyond their gaps and the result was fatal. I get them making 2-3 yards and a first down but....aghhh, they gave them the game after an incredible comeback. I would say that one play is a microcosm of their defensive season. They had to know the likelyhood of a run, any run being astronomically high but they couldn't stop it. To top it off, #23 (who looked good in mid season) just had a terrible game and looked like Rudy trying to stop Garrard.
A few more items in no particular order which seem like bad coaching decisions:
Kick off team personnel/execution: why kick it to Jones-Drew, why? In high school, we instruct our kicker where and to whom we want the ball kicked. Very simple, we don't give them opportunities if we can help it. Their coverage has been bad all year, especially in critical times.
KOR: Davenport? Still? No one else on the roster can do this, no one? It's the playoffs!! He's your starting and basically only halfback. If he gets hurt, now what? I don't care if he ran one back, it's a huge risk with a very small chance of a big play.
Punt team - particularly with 2:30 left in the game: why are we kicking the ball down the middle? Why give them a chance at setting up a return?? Why did the right side gunner break sharply inside? I don't think that's an accident, if it wasn't called then the guy is recklessly undisciplined. The return to the 50 yard line went directly into the vacated perimeter.
4th and 2 - ahhh, who was spying the QB? The guy's passer rating was less than 50 last time they put it up. Who are you playing? Who is their coach? I typed out this same rant after the last Jax game... argghh!!!!
Last KOR - ahhh, Davenport is still out there. Maybe since the season is basically over and you need a miracle - put in Holmes and Wilson deep(?) Or whoever your fastest 2 guys are... ahh hello?
I know this sounds really negative, but this is their profession. It's not OK to lose any game. After coming back again vs Jacksonville, after 3 INT's in the first half, after pulling a rabbit out of your ass in the 4th quarter, you can't lose to the same team on a draw play again... I'm sorry that can't happen. You can't crawl into a shell on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down to lose the game. How about this, how about you call timeout after seeing how they line up on your 3rd and 6? Better yet, how about you call timeout after you see how they line up when they have 4th and 2? No gamesmanship, no tactical thinking in crunchtime. It's not OK, it's not great try there Mikey... it's professional football.
I don't believe for a second that they are getting rid of Tomlin. I think Arians may be another story but I wouldn't even bet on that. The problem with the Steelers management is that they are willing to let the Head Coach learn on the job. Cowher got outcoached how many times in big games - a dozen? The players suffer when saddled with poor coaching decisions and strategies. The Steelers have had great players for most of 15 years. The management is at once their greatest stability and strength but also in some ways a weakness. This loss will hopefully not linger but I fear it might. The gut-wrenching losses really take a toll. How much time do many of these players have left?
The worst thing, I mean the absolutely most horrifying thing about the loss today means that starting Monday after the BCS game, I will have nothing to shield me from 6 months of NBA basketball on my television... Can't wait till spring practice...
Disappointed
I am proud of him that he waited for Garrard to finish his TV interviews on the field to congratulate him. I am proud that he stood before the media and TV audience at the Press Table and stated "I am ashamed of my performance today and I apologized to my team mates"
I am sure I will comment further tomorrow on the play calling after the initial drive tomorrow.
I must say if you watch the tape of the Garrard scramble on 4th and 2 LeBeau has Foote in the middle of the field as a spy on Garrard. The problem seemed to be (and I hate to sound like a Seahawk fan) that a blitzing Harrison in position to make the tackle is held on the play and Foote is held also creating what Garrard called the "gap" that appeared in the middle of the field.
The major disappointment is that despite the embarrassing play of our QB in the first half, despite the special teams gaffes in K and P coverage, despite Faneca and the O line being over run all night, despite a rookie coach playing not to lose instead of to win (like pre XL Cowher) and despite questionable offensive calls after the first series we still had the chance to win the game but were not given the obvious call at home. I couldn't help but think of the questionable hold call on Mahan (who I can't stand) at the goal line wiping out Wards successful 2 point conversion. The refs didn't cost us the game we cost us the game but still...
I agree
