Steelers' Bruce Arians: Should he stay or should he go?

All season long I've been a supporter of Bruce Arians and tried to explain to every why he shouldn't be fired, but after forcing myself to re-watch that game last night (and somehow hoping for a different outcome) I'm finally ready to stop defending the man. There are certain plays that we all noticed that raised some eyebrows such as the obvious conservative play calling on the final Steelers' drive (I'm not counting the one play sack and fumble as a drive), and others such as twice throwing fades to back of the end zone. I've never been a big fan of the fade route but it seems like a horrible route to call when you don't have a big receiver. There was one thing that really burns me when I watch this team though, and that is their love for running the ball on first down. The Steelers ran the ball 26 times total in the game, but 15 of those runs were on a first down (58%). Those 15 runs were almost half of all first down play calls (32 first down situations). Those numbers wouldn't be high in a normal game but when you consider that this team was playing from a considerable deficit for over half the game, it's pretty amazing. Here are some the drives broken down:

Drives that resulted in a TD: 17 first down situations: 4 runs, 13 passes (or attempted passes)

Drives 4 through 7 (stretched from 12:25 in the 2Q to 9:24 3Q): 10 first down situations: 8 runs, 2 passes  (for what it's worth those drives resulted in INT, INT, Punt, INT, FG)

Just for the naysayers out there: They were more effective running the ball on first down that any other down as they totaled 31 yards on the 15 runs (2.1 avg) which is a better than the 12 yards on 11 carries (1.1 avg) that they had outside of first down carries. Most of the first down yardage was gained on the first three first down carries by Davenport though that totaled 21 yards.

Conclusion: Basically the running game was nonexistent and Arians shouldn't be blamed for complete lack of success in that area, but I still think he could have done of better job of mixing in the run on other downs, especially considering the situations that his offense was in for much the game. He has done some really good things this year and I think he's had a large part in the growth and development of Ben this year but at the same time, I think this team can do better.

If there are any still Arians supporters out there, try and talk some sense into the rest of us, why should he stay? Or what are other play calls that burn you about this game or other games throughout the season?

Wish he could stay...
I'm all for consistency in football.  It's a lot of what has made the steelers so good for so long.  You don't make knee jerk reactions, you evaluate and change what isn't working.  I said this a little in another post, but again, I don't mind the schemes that Bruce runs.  It sure looks like Ben is extremely comfortable running those offenses and we had a good split between running and throwing as a percentage. But you're right Blitz, we are predictable on first downs.  And not only do we run it every time it's very standard runs, either a stretch or a up the gut dive.  I'd be fine if we saw some draws, end arounds and the like on first but we don't.

Big problem is that Bruce is not a new, young coordinator. He's not in a learning process. He's been doing this for a while so I don't see him growing as a play caller.  Thus he should not be calling our plays.

BUT...  Based on how Mike Tomlin has talked about things all year long I don't see him making big sweeping changes this off-season. I can almost see him saying that they failed in execution sometimes and they need to improve but he's not going to go away from something that led to a generally good offense, giving both our running back and quarterback enough opportunities that they were both elected to the probowl.

consistency
The part of me that wants him to stay keeps screaming that. If he stays though he'll no doubt be the play caller. There isn't anyone else qualified (certainly not Tomlin).
Time to take the training wheels off this offense.

Relax...
Guys, my apologies in advance for the semi rant you're about to read.

But we didn't lose this game on that 3rd and 6 play (or that series) alone. Ben threw 3 interceptions in a matter of like 15 minutes. The Special Teams let up what could have been the most deflating play of the entire game next to that 4th and 2 Garrard run, and we went for 2 unsuccessfully twice when we should have probably just taken the points.

Just because you want to blame someone doesn't mean the guy should be FIRED because of it. Face it, we did too many things wrong to win, and while  a large part of it could have been Arians, I'm not willing to pin it solely on him.

Big Ben and the Offense were significantly better than they ever were in the past. Frankly the fact that they were able to come back from 18 points down  to me says we did a lot of things right.

You know who should be fired? Bob Ligashesky and/or Larry Zierling. Post about that.

Arians
I'm glad there are still some guys on his side, he definitely did some good things this year.

Depends
I think it depends on who you fault for Ben's back to back INTs.  The third one seemed kind of fluky, in that the D-lineman stumbled on a screen and then got up just in time to be in the right place at the right time (or wrong, from our perspective).  Speaking of that play, it seems our execution of screens is not nearly what it was under Whisenhunt.

Also, if there is a great candidate out there (maybe Cam Cameron), I don't have a problem with making a change.  IIRC Arians was on the Steelers staff for a while, so he's did lend continuity with Ben.  We'll see, I guess.

I am for Keeping Arians...
I can remember numerous plays this year in key situations where I hated his call with the 3rd & 6 QB rollout/draw. That being said, this years offensive output, Ben's development and relationship with Arians and the ability to comeback from 15 and 18 point deficits are very encouraging for an offense under a new coordinator. This is even more impressive given our lack of talent and injuries on the O-line, starting WR missing multiple games, starting RB going on IR and our typical starting field position was below average (Actually I haven't researched this, only going by the eye test. Please let me know if I am mistaken). These were many of the positive things about the offense year.

Going forward, if Arians is retained and I hope he is, these are somethings I would like to see next year: quicker decisions by Ben/ more 3 step drops,   take out the fade route of our playbook, fewer WR screens and more screens to FWP, incorporate the TE's more in the offense (red zone especially) and I would like to see more No-Huddle.

If many of the same issues persist for a 2nd season, then I will get on board for change, but for now I think he deserves a 2nd season with a better (hopefully) O-Line.

Arians
I really like your adjustments for next year especially taking out the fade route and getting FWP and the TE's more involved.

talk to us
It wouldn't be hard for Arians to get 100% backing from this crowd. He has a press conference and says:

"I made some very bad mistakes. I'll never run the fade route again. I'll run the ball more against bad run defenses instead of trying to be a genius. Oh, and I'll read BTSC and take their comments into account."

Boom, everyone is sold. I just want to know that he is aware that he has made mistakes, not just Ben, not just A. Smith, and that he will work on it. I don't think I'm alone.

I'd run out and buy an Arians T-shirt the same day

replacement
Lets say he does get sacked, does anyone have any ideas for a good replacement? And why?

C. Cameron
Someone like Cam would be nice given his track record and history with young QB's (P.Rivers made the pro bowl under him which is downright amazing). However, I don't see the Rooney's paying him what other teams will.
Other than him, I am not sure who is out there. Any young position coaches worth mentioning?
