BTSC Prognostication: Welcome Back to the NFL, Coach Cowher

Congratulations to Coach Joe Gibbs and his Washington Redskins for their valiant run in the final quarter of the season. Four straight wins to close the season catapulted them into the playoffs, and if not for some ridiculous rule that disallows the kicking team from returning an onside kick unless it hits the receiving team, they might have edged out Seattle at Qwest Field and advanced to the Divisional Round.

After a slew of tough losses, the emotional loss of Sean Taylor, and an exhilirating close to the season, Coach Gibbs has decided to call it quits in Washington.

Now, for my prediction: Coach Cowher will leave his cozy desk job in the CBS studios in New York to coach the Washington Redskins. We've been over this before, but perhaps now's a good time to address the pros and cons again.

I, for one, don't buy any argument that revolves around his desire to be around his family more often. We've debated how many hours are actually spent preparing for these studio shows, and I think we all agreed that it's not a 40 hour-a-week job, but nevertheless, there's plenty of transaction time spent traveling, and when you're still in 'the game', as I suppose those 'analysts' are, there's many other hours spent watching games, and talking to players and coaches in order to stay in the know. It's certainly not the same level of commitment as coaching, but it's still enough of a commitment where Cowher probably is away from his family frequently, especially on the weekends when family time is most abundant.

Anyway, I'm only speculating on that front, but here's what I do know about the 'Skins job: they have a fantastic running game, a very promising young QB, they play in the NFC where fortunes can be made overnight, and perhaps most importantly, Dan Snyder would do whatever it took to make Cowher the highest paid coach in the NFL. And in my opinion, Cowher will be at, or near the top of Dan Snyder's list. Snyder doesn't exactly look for diamonds in the rough with his coaching searches...see Steve Spurrier, Schottenheimer, and Joe Gibbs.

Cowher is certainly not strapped for cash, but let's face it, he coached in Pittsburgh in the 90s primarily, for an organization that doesn't overpay and during an era when coaches weren't paid what they are now.

Is it that much of a stretch to think Cowher may use this line of reasoning: 'Well, I could watch a few more of my daughter's athletic events, or I could take this lucrative job now and ensure the three of them, plus my future grandchildren, will have everything they need for the rest of their lives.'

Money talks. Don't be surprised to see Cowher back on the sidelines next year.

Discuss.

If Cowher does coach the Skins
It will be very awkward when the Steelers play in Washington next year,..which i believe will be one of their road games. Anyway, better Washington than Baltimore as some have suggested.

By the way,...you guys should do a piece on our schedule next year,...we're slated to play the entire NFC east as well as the AFC south,.....2 of the toughest divisions in football. And we'll be playing the Pats again,...in Foxboro,....which doesn't seem fair.

yea
Our schedule is BRUTAL next year. Maybe I was a bit presumptous earlier when I said we'd be in the playoffs next year.

It is brutal
But i'm licking my chops for a piece of the Cowboys at Heinz. And I also can't wait to get another shot at Jax,...we need redemption.

Cowher and the Skins
I might be way off base here, and maybe we need Skin Patrol to either confirm or shoot this down, but I could have swore that I heard the last time that Gregg Williams (Skins D coordinator) was considered for a head coaching, Snyder gave him a big raise and basically promised he'd be the next head coach.

Has anyone else heard this or do I just need to take my medication?

Time to take the training wheels off this offense.

could be
I'll ask SP. Williams is 'Associate Head Coach' but then again, so is Al Saunders. Not sure about that promise, but I'll look into it.

Associate Head Coaches
Yeah... One thing about the redskins currently is that they're the only team I know that has more people with head coach in their title than coordinator.  I expect Snyder to look in house with one of his two coordinators.  But you've sufficiently scared me.  I hate the 'skins and love watching them blow it year after year even though they overspend everyone.  but i like cowher and would probably want to route for him.

I'm still betting he stays out one more year.  I believe him when he says he wants to spend the time at home.

very possible
If he waits though, he may be forced to sit our much longer than he might like.

DC is close to Carolina, I doubt John Fox will be fired in Carolina this offseason, though maybe next, but the Panthers wont pay like the Skins will.

Looking around the rest of the league, what other prestigious jobs are going to open up? San Francisco perhaps after next year, perhaps Kansas City after next year, maybe the Giants after next year pending this weekend and next year, and perhaps Philly. That's about all I can think of. The rest of the league, at least of the top of my head, seems locked in with their coaches for awhile. This may just be the right opportunity, even if its a year earlier than he'd like.

Seattle
Not necessarily for Cowher but I've heard talk that Holmgren is considering 'retirement' (quotes are just b/c coaches don't ever retire) b/c he's looking for full control over personel again. SF was rumored as his possible future destination.
Time to take the training wheels off this offense.

Interesting
I think that if Cowher does not take this job, that would have to put to rest the talk of him leaving Pittsburgh to recharge and then come back for the big payday.  I say that because I can't think a position that would be more attractive to him from that standpoint.  As you say, Blitz, Snyder will pay well.  The team seems poised to begin a run: a good running game, a young QB who should be coming into his own soon, a pretty good defense IIRC.  Carolina, SF, KC, are all rebuilding jobs.  The Giants and Philly make a little more sense, but Philly would be looking at replacing McNabb within a few years.

I wouldn't be surprised if he does take the 'Skins job, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he stays in broadcasting for longer than a year two.

we shall see
I usually avoid bold predictions. Last tiem I made one on the site was the Browns Jets game and the Jets burned me :)

I just have a feeling about this one. Anybody can have 'feelings' though, mine are certainly no more credible on this subject, that's for sure.

I just think the $$$$$$$$ + the Skins roster + NFC + pretty close to Carolina = good enough opportunity that he won't pass it up.

by Blitzburgh on Jan 8, 2008 3:58 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Solid reasoning
I agree with your reasoning.  That's why I say, if he gets offered this job and decides against it, it's more likely that he will stay out of coaching for longer than a couple years.

Snyder's no rooney
One thing that would probably give him pause. The skins are $20 million OVER cap next year if I remember correctly!  While the roster is decent now, it will be a constant process of dealing with the crappy overpaid players that Snyder hands you and cutting decent people because you can't afford their normal salaries.  I'd have to assume Cowher is smart enough to think through who would be above him. He had it pretty good with the Rooneys and Colbert. He may be reticent about going to a place with such shady business decisions as Snyder.

Cap
I had forgotten about the Redskins cap position next year.  Yeah, that makes it less likely for Cowher to come into this position.  Also, everyone I heard last night reported that Gregg Williams will likely be the new coach.
