When It Rains, It Pours: Steelers Add Undervalued RB Mewelde Moore
Value. It's the name of the game in today's NFL. Always has been though with the Rooneys and the Steelers' front office. It's not often that us fans get to share in much of the excitement that surrounds NFL Free Agency, and this year is generally no different. We just don't go out and hand guys like Donte Stallworth $30+ million dollars. Never have. Never will.
But what we can look forward to is adding pieces like Minnesota RB/PR Mewelde Moore, the Vikings 4th-round draft choice in 2004. John Clayton of ESPN, just reported that the Steelers have agreed to terms on a 3-year $4.95 million dollar deal with Moore, who couldn't find much playing time behind super-sensation Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor in Minnesota's crowded backfield.

Moore provides an instant-upgrade in the speed deparment
as a 3rd-down back and return specialist
In addition to shouldering a piece of the Steelers' rushing duties, expect Moore to slip into the punt returner role in 2008 for Pittsburgh. I wouldn't be surprised to see him return kicks as well. And, fingers crossed here, if Fast Willie Parker wears down or is inflicted with another unfortunate injury like the one he suffered against the Rams late last year, Moore can be trusted to carry the rock as well. In 2005, Moore started 8 games, accumulating 662 yards on 155 carries. His 4.4 yards per carry that year were actually .5 yards below his career average of 4.9. Moore also has solid hands and the ability to make the first guy miss after the catch. His career high is 47 catches in 2006, but he caught 27 and 37 balls in 2004 and 2005 respectively, before falling off to just 6 catches in '07. His 9.4 yards per catch should excited Steelers fans eager to see the screen pass utilized a bit more. And finally, Moore isn't a liability turnover-wise. In 380 career touches (rushes + receptions), he has only put the ball on the carpet twice, losing only one. Not bad, not bad at all.
So, be proud Steelers Nation. I have a feeling that we're going to look back at this signing very favorably in a couple year's time. For just a few bucks, at least compared to what other players are receiving this year, we have obtained a reliable back-up who can bolster our special teams play, spell Parker in the event of an emergency, catch the ball out of the backfield, and not turn the ball over. Disappointed we didn't get a bigger 'name'? Well, consider this. The ever-trendy Michael Turner, San Diego's former back-up RB who admittedly was impressive when called upon, just inked a 6-year deal worth more than $34.5 million including $15 million guaranteed. Is he worth $30 million more than Moore?? Didn't think so.
I suspect just about everybody will be pleased with this move except Najeh Davenport and Willie Reed. Depending on what transpires with Nate Washington and what we do with Cedrick Wilson, there probably just isn't room for Reed on this squad now that we have Moore for return duties. As for Najeh? Well, depends how much faith we have in Gary Russel to be our third option. If we think he can do the job if called upon, I'd suspect Davenport will be employed elsewhere, as it just doesn't make much sense to carry three RBs at over $1 million per year (FWP + Moore + Davenport). We'll see though. It's entirely plausible we keep Davenport as insurance, have Moore field both punts and kickoffs, and then have the two of them split whatever carries FWP doesn't get in '08 before reassesing in '09.
Good job Steelers! Welcome to the family Mewelde. This is why I'll continue espouting my faith in the decisions and direction of this proud franchise. Let the celebration continue.

good signing
I really think Moore's gonna help this team out on 3rd downs and in the return game. This won't make ESPN but it makes this team better.

yea
Willie Reed and Najeh may suddenly have just had their careers in Pittsburgh flash before their eyes. Reed, in particular.

My initial guess...
Moore will return punts but not kicks. It's a whole different element. The punt guy needs to have great hands and be consistently solid with a rare break at a key time. The kick guy needs electricity since he doesn't get touched for 15 yards. They are really totally different positions and shouldn't be lumped into the same thought.
That being said, they will either give the kick return job to Reid, who is still cheap at $445K, and must finally fish or cut bait, or they'll get a fourth-round receiver who can help that corp and is also a return specialist.
If the latter is the case, then the Steelers will have added running back depth who is a good punt returner, and also receiving depth who is also a good kick returner. I'm liking that alot.

Finally, a signing that I can get behind
Also as mentioned, he should make either Reid or Dookie expendable. Plus Rossum was also cut. So this signing essentially opens up a roster spot.
Apart from extending Ben, I think this is the best signing since Tomlin was hired. I didn't really like the resigning of Simmons or the acquisition of Mahan last year. Signing Dookie wasn't a bad move considering the available options last year, but I think MM is an upgrade.

Is Eugene Wilson or Starks next?
I don't know that much about Mewelde Moore but I've always heard that he was a good football player that didn't get the ball much. He definitely could help this team next year as a runner, 3rd down receiver, kickoff and punt returner.
I believe Cedric Wilson will be cut and Willie Reid, Gerran Walker or J. Bloom will win that 4th WR spot. Whoever wins that job will be the slot receiver and kickoff returner, as well as the backup punt returner. Reid's speed is still a big plus on a team that wants to spread the field offensively. Bloom could surprise in the return game and Tomlin likes Walker.
In free agency, the steelers like to sign players coming off of the first contract, are under the radar and have a lot of upside. Eugene Wilson fits that mold and he'd be an upgrade to our free safety spot. I just wonder if they're going to have to relinquish Starks to do that.
I am a Starks supporter on this board, especially for this year, because I think the team will be left scrambling if he isn't resigned. If they can resign him and draft that Brandon Albert from UVa. in the first round, I believe our OL will be much improved with good depth. Let's see what Colbert can do.

no surprise really
Moore is one of the best receiving RBs in the NFL. In his first three years he had 110 catches (just six in 07, his fourth year). He averaged almost 10 yds per catch his first three years. He's a good elusive runner who is not shy about running between the tackles. He packs some strength and will break tackles. He"s not a first-stringer, he's had some minor injuries, coming off an invisible season, so he won't cost a lot of money. He'll probably get a number of similar offers based on backup RB pay scales. Of course, having been in Minnesota, he is familiar with Mike Tomlin and might like the idea of playing for him, especially if he is given the opportunity to replace or beat out Davenport. Tomlin was in Minny the same season Moore had 46 catches (10.1 avg), a 5.5 YPC rushing average (only 24 carries) and 36 PR (10.2 avg, 1 TD).
I honestly don't expect the Steelers to be that interested in signing a free agent RB. They have bigger needs on the DL and OL. But Moore wouldn't cost a lot of money while providing immediate assistance in two areas where the Steelers struggled, and better backup insurance to Parker in case of injury. The Steelers might still have enough cap space to pursue another middle of the road veteran DL or OL free agent (such as Minny DE Darrion Scott or Jax OL Maurice Williams), but that's a story for another day.

Reid not fiinished yet
We've seen enough of Reid on returns but I liked what I saw of his brief appearances as a WR. He is both quick and fast and caught the few balls thrown his way. He's perhaps best suited as a slot receiver rather than a wide out. If Hines or Santonio are injured, Nate can replace them while Reid slides into the slot. If Moore is pressed into starting duty, Reid might be able to handle returns for a game or two. There wiill be competition at camp from Baker, Trannon and either a draft pick or undrafted free agents, but I wouldn't be surprised if Willie is our No. 4 guy. Wilson has to be cut or, with luck, traded for a late-round draft pick. If Rossum is worth a 7th rounder, Wilson might get us a sixth-rounder. He isn't used enough to justify his salary.

thanks maryrose ...
I don't know where Colbert and Rooney are finding the money, but if they can dig up another $6-7 million to sign both Hadnot (rather than re-sign Starks) and DL Darrion Scott, then I would really celebrate.

Can't wait to see
Ben used the dump pass really effectively in the playoff game on one drive in particular. Too bad he didn't use it more throughout the season, or was that Ariens call to make?

Steelerlifer, I feel you on W. Reid
He showed good hands on his quick screens, great explosion and good toughness. Also, there is no substitute for speed in the NFL. If Santonio goes down, the Steelers will still need someone with the ability to stretch the field. I don't want Reid catching punts, but I'd give him a shot to return kickoffs back there with M. Moore.
A guy that is intriguing to me on the WR corps is Matt Trannon. He has monster size at 6'6'', 230-lb. and is a great athlete. He can make this team and be active on game days by simply being a great special teams player. Just come down on kickoffs and punts and bust some heads. Ben would love him in the red zone, too.
I saw Trannon play in college and thought that, if a team is patient with him and has a great WR coach, that he could develop into something. Remember, two things that you can't teach are speed and size.
I'm a little greedy, but give me a resigned Max Starks, Pats S Eugene Wilson and a great draft, and I think this team is ready to compete once again for another ring. And yes, I am an optimist.
Blitzburgh, what up!

What would we do with Wilson?
by maryrose on Mar 4, 2008 9:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
been wondering the same thing myself
Who knows though safeties can be pretty interchangable so maybe they're hoping to sign him with the intention that he'll be Troy's primary backup. He might also be a really go special teams player, anyone know if that's true or not?

if Wilson
by TheMostViolentTeam on Mar 4, 2008 12:33 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Scouts Inc.
Comment: Wilson is versatile, athletic and tough. He can play free safety or cornerback and is physical for either position. He communicates calls and adjustments within the secondary. His quickness and range in coverage are enhanced by good anticipation and instincts. He plays with balance and under control in coverage, transitioning smoothly. He has good recovery speed and downfield range. He can match up with receivers and tight ends in man-to-man. He uses his hands and body to reroute receivers at the line. He is competitive against the run, playing bigger than his size suggests. He has the speed to run the alleys and usually takes good angles to the ball. Wilson pursues well but isn't always under control attacking the run. He has some size limitations as a tackler. In coverage, he sometimes tries to do too much and can be caught out of position. He occasionally will bite on play action and allow a receiver to get behind him. His work habits and consistency could be better.

I'm starting to get really interested in this guy
Does anyone remember this about Mr Wilson:
He intercepted Ben twice in the Patriots 41-27 victory in the 2004 AFC Championship Game.

Wilson a good fit for this team
I think because of his injuries the past couple of years and the Patriots drafting a safety with its first pick this past year, he's flying under the radar. In fact, with so many safeties already being signed to big deals, I know he isn't getting the attention that he thought.
Even if Ryan Clark comes back healthy, I think he would be an upgrade to the secondary. I still like Anthony Smith, but maybe he's a better fit at strong safety as Palomula's backup than he is at free safety, at least until he learns to keep the ball in front of him.
I also believe that the Steelers wouldn't bring him in unless he is someone that they have targeted and feel that he could be a good fit in their budget and on their team. The Steelers just don't do stuff for show. I'd cut Cedric Wilson and Ty Carter to do this deal.
I think E. Wilson has more playmaking ability than Clark or A. Smith in going and getting the ball, and I also remember him laying some wood in games against the Steelers, especially against Hines Ward. He's a good player, not an all-world player.
I also like the fact that he can play cornerback in a pinch if needed and that he has excellent coverage skills for a safety.
Since when have we been able to say that for any of our safeties, including Palomula?

Steelers chances on Wilson
To look at the team's safety position, the only Steeler that is making big money is Troy. Clark didn't sign a big contract and A. Smith is still on his rookie contract. E. Wilson isn't going to get a huge deal. If he was, he would have gotten it by now.
The fact that the Steelers are bringing him in and that he wants to come in to visit means that there is some interest there. Whether it will result in more than that remains to be seen.
