Steelers Lock up Big Ben for the Next Eight Years

ESPN just reported that the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger have agreed to a new 8 year $102 million dollar contract with more than $36 million guaranteed.  In comparison, Peyton Manning received a $34.5 million signing bonus in his big deal and Michael Vick received $37 million in guarantees from the Falcons in his mega deal.

Have fun Mr. Roethlisberger. No new motorcycles though, ok?

So what do you think Steelers' fans, too much? Or is there a price that's too big for a franchise QB of Ben's caliber?

P.S. A very interesting note at the end of the article also says that they are in the process of adding another weapon to Roethlisberger's arsenal. They hosted former Vikings running back Mewelde Moore on Sunday and his signing appears imminent. Looks like we finally got one right here on BTSC.

Editor's Note from Blitzburgh:

A few things here guys and gals. For now, we're leaving this simple thread as a sort-of celebratory post for the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger, who certainly received the best 26th birthday present (his birthday was Sunday) that I've ever seen. But there's plenty to be discussed in the immediate future about the deal, what it means for our salary cap situation moving forward, as well as how his deal stacks up against the rest of the NFL's premiere QBs. A reader has emailed me saying that he'll be working on a spreadsheet comparing Ben's salary cap allocation compared to his peers. I look forward to seeing that.

And finally, it's worth noting now and then discussing, that this commitment to Roethlisberger punctuates what has been a slow, but nevertheless a steady, transformation of this organization from one that once was a run-at-all costs team, to one that has essentially put all its proverbial eggs in the basket of its QB and the plays he might make in the passing game.

Wow.
We need CapGuy to tell us just where we stand this year now.  Golden, please remove my diary as it will be redundant with your main post.  I posted at the same time you did.

Ok, it's gone
Talk about a great way to start the week huh? Luckily Blitz called me and tipped me off, ESPN is the only one with the story so far.

very exciting
Need to digest the numbers today and this week, but for now we celebrate!

Wow!!!!
This is great - Getting Ben signed up long term is crucial to our success.  Wonderful!  Great way to start a week.  If we get Mewelde it would be even better.  Kick/Punt Returner and great receiving back..

It's just sinking in a bit...
But if Michael Vick was guaranteed $37 million (aside from his legal problems) and Peyton was guaranteed $34 million, both in 2004, then Ben's similar amount four years later with inflation and salary cap boosts doesn't seem so bad.

C'Mon Mewelde...We need you buddy...

I wonder if there's a motorcycle clause?
Seriously, if you were committing that kind of cash wouldn't that be fair to ask?

AWESOME NEWS
It is being reported in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review as well.
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_555290.html

Ben is a franchise QB. He has won a SB. I feel he will win at least another before he retires if the FO surrounds him with the right players. He will continue working to improve the area's in which he is lacking. Ben deserves what he got. This is a great day for Pittsburgh!

it
It allows us to know we got ben for 8 years.  Now later down the road he could possibly adjust his contract to get some players around him in the future like Brady.  Look at Indy, they have many players that are paid a shit load (manning, harrison, adui, dallas clark, wayne) but some how they stay under the cap.

Ben
Haha, nice picture.  Yeah, that's a lot of money.  SalCap guessed 7 years, $82M, $33.5M guaranteed.  While the deal is more than that, it's not much more, considering the last couple of years are usually more inflated.  If you look at it per year, SalCap guessed 11.7/4.8 and Ben got 12.75/4.5.  It's a lot of money, but it's a lot of years, too, and the cap numbers are just going to keep going up.  It would be interesting to see what the contract's cap numbers are per year, and what dumb jackass clauses are present.

Yeah, if the Steelers sign Moore and possibly Starks, we should be alright after the draft.  I think I read on the PG that we're talking to Eugene Wilson of the Pats, too.  I'm not too keen on that, but maybe that says something about Ryan Clark.

by BadMaafala on Mar 3, 2008 9:53 AM EST   0 recs

well
There's rumblings of 2011 being an uncapped year. If that happens, the game could change (for the worse) forever. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires after 2010 I believe. I'll be writing about this soon.

As it relates to Ben, that number's not going to be excessive at all for us to accomodate and remain competitive.

uncapped year
that would be horrible for the NFL, can you imagine the money that teams like Dallas and  Washington would throw around. I'd hate for the NFL to be like MLB, even if it was for just one year.

In Line
The more I thought about it the more I like Ben's contract - as Maryrose points out above - It's in line with both Vick's and Manning's contracts.. from 2004.. At that point neither QB had won a SB.. Ben has one ring already and I believe has shown he is the man.. Great move..

First news...
I found it funny to notice that although this weekend was huge for many many teams, there was no real buzz on the site.  Product of experienced Steeler fans knowing that the first week of free agency holds nothing for them.

But at least we get this piece of good news.  I'm with the sentiment that you pay Ben what you need to so he's locked up for the long term.  While football's a team sport having a franchise quarterback means more than anything.

Moore's a good football player and I'd be happy to have him.  He's not too much of an upgrade returner-wise.  Much like rossum he's solid and doesn't make many mistakes.  But he doesn't have break-out speed and vision.

by Chicago Steeler on Mar 3, 2008 10:29 AM EST   0 recs

Great news for many reasons
  1. We keep Ben in all likelihood for the entirety of his career. Woohoo!!!
  2. As great as the news is about Ben, I never had a doubt the Steelers would get it done. However, I wasn't as positive the Steelers would also be able to afford or be focused on providing him with better weapons. I liked Moore early on; he is a terrific receiving threat and an upgrade on Davenport. Here are two links to stories about Moore:  http://www.footballdiner.com/sammonson2.html which I posted on a BTSC review of the RB position, about three weeks ago; and this one: http://vikingsragnarok.blogspot.com/2007/01/look-at-offense-needing-more-moore.html ... He's a quality player and person who should at least equal Rossum's KO return numbers and be a major upgrade on PR.
  3. The timing is positive. It means the team has its priorities right. It means we have the cap space to make things happen without a lot of cap casualties at least to this point. The breakdown of the yearly salary cap hits will tell us a little more about that, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers are trying to make deals to ship out Wilson and Davenport for late-round draft picks. If Rossum cost us a 7th-rounder, surely Wilson could be worth a 6th or 7th while saving $2 mill against the cap. Same thinking applies to Davenport (saving $1.2 mill), but anyone interested in him might just wait until he gets cut, which is inevitable.
  4. I still expect us to sign a decent FA d-lineman (such as another ex-Viking, Darrion Scott) but that could depend on whether Starks comes back. Hard to imagine we could re-sign Starks and another FA, in addition to Moore, but there are stories linking us to Cincy MLB Landon Johnson and NE S Eugene Wilson.
  5. What's become apparent is that the Steelers have a specific plan in place and that the pieces are coming together in spite of our alleged Cap difficulties. We don't know that plan yet but as fans it's certainly fun to speculate. Perhaps the Transition Tag on Starks is a smokescreen to kill outside interest in him or hide our interest in someone else (center Rex Hadnot, guard Jacob Bell or tackle Sean Locklear). Perhaps there is another plan in the works to release or trade a veteran who takes up significant cap space (Farrior, Simmons, Foote or Townsend).  Simmons seems unlikely because of the dead money involved in his remaining four years, but the dead money could be pushed over to next year and his relatively low base salary over four years makes him attractive to other teams, perhaps worth a 3rd or 4th rounder. If we re-sign Starks, then we have a number of veteran guard candidates (Kemo, Colon and Mahan) and perhaps Brandon Albert. Farrior is likely gone after this year and perhaps a plan to cut or trade him is the reason there is interest in Johnson, who was the Bengals leading tackler three of the last four years. Interest in Wilson might indicate that Clark's illness and slow recovery is career-threatening.
So many scenarios, so little time. But a great day for tangible reasons and a fun day for speculative b.s.

7 reasons I love the deal
I don't want to rehash what I wrote on my blog...but I gave 7 reason why I LOVE the Big Ben signing. http://www.5goldenrings.net

great stuff
Love #7, as a father to be I can't wait to sit and explain Ben's greatness to my youngster.

Nice...
I think his resume speaks for itself, plus, he's still only 26 years old, set a record for TD passes despite a suspect O-line.  I LIKE IT!  Now let's watch him keep it going eh?  Still think Faneca shoulda just shut up and play and maybe he'd have some high money too.  But oh well, I hope he does well for the Jets to be honest.

Now let's trade away somebody to lock up Rashard Mendendall.

by Mikey on Mar 3, 2008 12:46 PM EST   0 recs

Draft strategy
I'm going to wait until the FA dust settles before going through possible draft scenarios. But if we sign Moore, I don't think there is any chance we will draft a RB until at best a late round, and probably not at all. OL, DL and LB still have to be the priorities. Similarly, a WR-KR like Donald Royal or Kevin Robinson is probably off the boards as well.

Press Conference
Has anyone heard what time the press conference is?

If anyone is feeling negative about the signing
Does this make you feel better?

Ben Roethlisberger became the seventh player in NFL history to sign a $100 million contract.

 Player Team Contract
Ben Roethlisberger, 2008 Steelers 8 years, $102M
Carson Palmer, 2005 Bengals 9 years, $118.75M
Michael Vick, 2004 Falcons 10 years, $130M
Daunte Culpepper, 2003 Vikings 10 years, $102M
Donovan McNabb, 2002 Eagles 12 years, $115M
Drew Bledsoe, 2001 Patriots 10 years, $103M
Brett Favre, 2001 Packers 10 years, $101M

by maryrose on Mar 3, 2008 7:20 PM EST   0 recs

Somewhat uncomfortable
I love Big Ben and the fact that he will be our QB for the next eight years but the size of this contract does make me somewhat uncomfortable. It would have been great if he had taken the Tom Brady approach and left a little more for the team to sign others. The $100M list from maryrose above is a bit spooky - none of those players lived up to those contracts after the point they were signed. (Palmer still has a shot but its unlikely given all the other drama surrounding the Bengals)

That said, Ben's ultra-competitiveness should only drive him more after this payday. But he's going to need to prove his leadership a little more in the locker room because this kind of money dwarfs the contracts of even the highly respected and well paid veterans like Ward or Polamalu and could cause some resentment.

Any word yet on the year by year breakdown and how spread out the guaranteed money is?

nice comps maryrose
Here is an interesting article to read in retrospect:

don't be fooled
by the big headline number of 102 million.  his per year money is just a little bit more than Romo when you boil it all down.  once i finish my breakdown of the salaries you'll see.  we got a "just right" deal with Ben, not too much, not too little.  Brady didn't leave as much on the table as you might think either.
