BTSC Mock Draft - Pick #11 by Buffalo Bills: Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma

Many thanks to belvalle55 for his selection for the Buffalo Bills at #11. He was kind enough to submit his pick late last week, so much love for him for keeping things rolling while he's away. Having lived in Big 12 country the past couple of years, I've seen his selection numerous times and can confidently assert that he should become a very credible and dependable #2 option in this league. Next up? The Denver Broncos and TShaff.

There has been plenty of rumor spreading and speculation about the health of Malcolm Kelly's knees that would drop his draft status under conventional wisdom. But, the Bills aren't biting. If he is available, Malcom Kelly, WR Oklahoma (6'4"/212 lbs; 4.5/40), will team up with Lee Evans to form a dynamic duo for their young QB, Trent Edwards.  WR is one of the Bills top priorities, as the Bills offense finished the 2007 season ranked 29th in passing yards per game at just 164.6. More weapons at WR means defenses would have to divert some of their capital from stacking the box to stop Marshawn Lynch and from double-teaming Evans on the outside. This would be huge for the Bills, especially when you remember how young and unseasoned Trent Edwards is at this point in his career.

Another need is at TE where Robert Royal leaves plenty to be desired, but there is no one even close to value at #12. If Malcolm Kelly is off the board or completely unimpresses Bills' executives at his Pro-Day workout this Wednesday, they will look at a cornerback, where there is plenty of talent in this year's class. Leodis McKelvin CB of Troy would be their first choice. If he is gone they will go for a small school stud, DCR, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB Tennessee St. Buffalo has a history of drawing talent from small schools.

But because I do not expect him to do anything short of wow scouts during OU's Pro Day activities, and because it's highly unlikely he's selected before they pick at #11, I'm selecting Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma with the #11 pick in the BTSC Mock Draft.

I gotta say
it seemed like he caught the ball with his hands on just about every one of those highlights.  That's pretty impressive.  I am a little wary of WR taken so high.  It seems like too many of them have been busts (see the Lions and Falcons drafting 1st rounders recently and the Bengals in the 90s).  But he does seem to have the tools.  And, the Bills certainly need a lot of help at WR.

Kelly won't be the first WR picked
that honor will go to Devin Thomas. Unless Kelly runs well at his pro day Thursday, he will drop like a rock in the first rd and might even drop out of it completely.

WRs
I've been getting most of my pre-draft info here and the NFL network.  On the NFLN, Mayock has consistently said that he doesn't think any of the WRs in the draft are true Round 1 material.  After what I've seen in the last several years, it does seem that the biggest recent busts have been at that position.  If I was drafting, I'd rarely go WR in the first round.  The only real successes that I can think of recently are the Steelers' first round picks (Holmes and Burress).  Also, Torry Holt's had a great career thus far.  Other than that, it seems like most of the top receivers have been taken in later rounds  (oh, yeah, there was Randy Moss, he was a 1st rounder, right?)

Larry Fitzgerald is pretty good
Picked 3rd Overall in 2004.

And I think Calvin Johnson will eventually be a stud.  Roy Williams is pretty good.  Dwayne Bowe was a first rounder who had a great rookie year.  I would say Braylon Edwards is good.  And then there is Andre Johnson.  Reggie Wayne was a 1st rounder in 2001.

I wouldn't say they are all busts.  Only the stupid picks.

Ok, you got me
I thought Fitzgerald was first round, but couldn't remember.  Roy Williams has been good, and the jury is still out on Calvin Johnson, but how many first round picks did the Lions spend on WR to finally get to 2 good ones?  Something like 5 or 6? I guess my point is that if you have a need, don't necessarily bank on one first rounder filling the need.

the lions
picked 4 WRs out of five in the first round the last five years.  Mike Williams(bust), Roy Williams(not a bust), Charles Rogers(bust), and Calvin Johnson(?).

On a side note, the Lions have picked an unbelievable 6 times in a row in the top 10.  Thats a lotta losin'.

Thanks
I guess I should start looking things up more. :)  It really seemed like every year they were drafting their "next star WR" for most of the Matt Millen era.  And, yeah, they've lost a lot during his tenure as GM.  I still can't believe that the owner thought he would make a good GM.  I loved Millen as a LB.  He was tough and hard-nosed, all that you would expect from a LB.  But, I don't even remember him being on any team's staff for long enough to know how to run an NFL franchise.

But, I do think the Lions have a ways to go before they match the Bungles for years of ineptness.

Lions horrible drafting
What even more amazing is what they've got left of those last 6 1st round picks:
  • Joey Harrington (2002-3rd overall) we all know the story
  • Charles Rogers (2003-2nd overall) again we all know he's not even in the league anymore
  • Roy Williams (2004-7th overall) finally a good pick
  • Mike Williams (2005-10th overall) currently on the Titans roster but only has 44 career receptions in four seasons (29 came his rookie year
  • Ernie Sims (2006-9th overall) - looks like decent starter (32 starts) and over 120 both seasons
  • Calvin Johnson (2007-2nd overall - too early to tell
At best that 3 complete bust out of six, with the book still out on Calvin Johnson. He hasn't shown signs of being a bust yet but he is in Detroit and Mike Martz isn't the OC anymore (think what you will about him as a coach but he inflates QB and WR numbers everywhere he goes).

Seems like
I agree with not being much of a true 1st Round WR. Just by looking at all of there numbers, it seems like they are all identical. Basically all Big in height with below Average speed around 4.5.

We're not seeing any like Holmes who was clocked at 4.38 or Calvin Johnson who was 4.35 I think.

Big WR's are nice to have, but big FAST WR's(Moss, Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Roy Williams etc) are much better and doesnt appear to be any this year that are first round material.

Not a big fan of Kelly
but there's no doubt the Bills need offensive weapons and there's no clear cut #1 wide out. He could be a nice compliment to Lee Evans

Kelly runs horrible at OU Pro Day!!!
A 4.68 forty is HORRIBLE for a wide receiver with first round talent, but he has an excuse. According to him OU change the location of the Pro Day the morning of from the Astroturf of the Mosier Center to field turf inside the Everest Indoor Training Center. Kelly said he had been preparing to run on the Astroturf and in the past month he'd run under 4.5 on that surface.

Don't know if I buy a different surface creating a difference of .2 of a second but I'm sure NFL coaches and scouts will know whether this is BS or not.

I ran a 4.5 on astroturf....
um, never.
