The NFL yellow line explained.

Though this has nothing to do with Oregon, it's still pretty darn cool.

Another Rose Bowl laugher, and the joke's still on the BCS

If you needed any more evidence of the absurdity of the two team playoff we have, Doc Saturday points to another Rose Bowl blowout.

Future Coach Kelly won't retain coaches Gray, Plfugrad

According to Moseley, defensive line coach Michael Gray, and receivers coach Robin Pflugrad won't be retained when we takes over as head coach.

This is from Bellotti himself, who has given this OK to Kelly. However, the tenure of coach Aliotti remains "solid." There are said to be others close to Kelly that would take over those positions.

This will most likely come as a surprise to many, considering there were no rumblings concerning these position coaches.

Personally, I don't think many fans, myself included, can really critique this move. The coaching positions are far enough down the ladder that their impact won't be incredible, especially if Kelly already has candidates in mind.

But this means two important things. First, Kelly is starting to have a say in the make up of the coaching staff. That this is happening earlier rather than later is good, getting his feet wet while Bellotti is still around. Second, these are moves on both offense and defense. While I am a full Bellotti supporter, he has at times neglected the defense. I am glad that early on, Kelly is taking an active interest.

What should also be of note for many fans is the standing of Aliotti, though I have heard that Kelly and Aliotti have worked very well together.

While this won't quell the everpresent outrage against the defensive coordinator, this is another step forward to Bellotti moving on to the AD position.

Rose Bowl Open Thread

Hey! It's the bowl game that takes itself way too seriously and stops a playoff! I'm so glad we get a parade and a "Rose Queen" instead of more and better football.

Suck it Rose Bowl.

At least it should be a good game this year. Let's hope the Pac-10 goes 5-0 in bowl games.

3 Keys to the Holiday Bowl

What a great way to end the season. Mike Bellotti secures another 10-win season, his 4th. Oregon has another 300 yard day, and the much maligned defense made the plays that it needed to, keeping Oregon in the game during a sloppy first half.

But there were a few things with this game that brought out a victory.

1) Oregon was the far more physical team in the game, and Oklahoma State was toast by the 4th quarter.

Mike Gundy admitted after the game, "They were just more physical.”

Dez Bryant was shaken up multiple times, and was a non-factor in the 4th quarter. Zac Robinson could not throw an accurate pass by the end of the game, having taken an enormous hit by TJ Ward at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, and multiple tough shots throughout. This clearly affected him late in the game.

On top of this, Oregon controlled the lines of scrimmage. OSU could not run the ball nearly as effectively as they had the entire season. Hunter got on 37 yards on 13 carries, when he had been the leading rusher in the Big 12 before this game.

As much as the spread has gotten away from smash mouth football, a spread team can get out there and punch the other team out. Oregon came out and did that, and the physical play took away what OSU tried to do.

2) Jeremiah Masoli can run the spread option as well as just about any QB I've seen.

He made on mistake on the game, the 4th and goal that was stuffed, but other than that, he was pretty darn great. It should be said again, this play really does make our offense. It spreads the defense more than any other play that we run. And this play was not run effectively to any degree until the UCLA game.

When run effectively, this opens up everything Oregon wants to do. They can run, they can pass, and it's almost impossible to stop. Masoli continued to run it very skilfully, setting up the offensive output in the second half.

3) Chip Kelly decided to run the ball in the 2nd half.

In the first half, Jeremiah Johnson touched the ball 5 times. Jamere Holland ran the ball once, and Blount did not touch the ball. This was out of 33 plays. This was totally unacceptable. But Kelly pulled it together in the 2nd half, the running game was emphasiszed, and 35 points were put on the board.

This is no coincidence. The OSU defense was worn down and pushed around in the second half. There was never any inkling that OSU would be able to stop the Oregon rushing game. They frequently had no clue where the ball was, and could not handle the physicality of the Oregon line, Masoli, or Blount.

It took a half to get there, but Oregon asserted it's strengths when it mattered most.

Overall, it was a sloppy, yet exciting game. Oregon dominated the second half due to physicality and making the right adjustments, and it's a perfect cap to what turned out to be a great season.

If you have any specific observations or keys to the game, leave em in the comments.

My Holiday Bowl "Preview"

Bowl games are an interesting thing. They really don't matter. I will forever think that almost all bowl games have almost no impact on the college football landscape. They are glorified exhibition games. There is little link between bowl game performance and future performance. They impact recruiting a small amount. On rare occasion, it is a springboard for a future season. But in the end, bowl games exist to make money, to milk us college football fans out of even more money, and if all goes well, to entertain the college football fans.

This is why I'm looking forward to the Holiday Bowl. It should be one of the most entertaining bowl games of the year. If Oregon loses, who cares? And if our team wins, then we'll enjoy a fun win.

We all know what needs to happen to secure the win. Our offense needs to play a mistake free game. The defense needs to pressure Zac Robinson and make some plays. It will be a simliar gameplan that we've seen all season, and will come down to execution.

So, enjoy the game. Enjoy watching Nick Reed terrorize opposing quarterbacks, and Jeremiah Johnson's stiffarm. Smile as you watch Patrick Chung blow someone up, or Max Unger open a gaping hole in the Cowboy defense. Mourn that we only had one full year of Terrence Scott. And enjoy watching the rest of the seniors in their final game.

On Tuesday night, I will have a great time, and simply hope to watch a great football game. Enjoy the fact that this game means nothing, and hope for a playoff while you watch it.

GO DUCKS!
