Chargers RB LaDanian Tomlinson won the Most Valuable Player Award in a landslide, collecting all but 5 of the 50 first place votes.
It's hard to argue against those numbers, but I think the media has put far too much significance on the TD record. After all, it's a record that's been broken three times I believe in the past 5 years. Hardly a hallowed record. Once Tomlinson got in the ballpark of Shaun Alexander's record, the Chargers did anything and everything imaginable to give him the ball near the goal line. I'm not trying to take away from his season, just that he shouldn't be handed the award on a plate based on that one record.
How many games do the Chargers win with Michael Turner, their speedy backup, as the starter? I'd guess at least 9, probably more.
How many games would the Chiefs win without Larry Johnson??? I'd say 6, 7 tops. There's certainly a case to be made for the workhouse with 400+ carries.
What about the Saints without Drew Brees? Again, 6 or 7 wins--and that's probably being generous. My vote would be for Brees, but that's mainly because I grew up playing sports with him and his brother :)
What do you guys think?
