A few news bits to start the day:

* Hines Ward has been named a finalist for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. The other finalists for the award, named for the Bears RB who died in '99,  are Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor, Chiefs guard Brian Waters and Cowboys tight end Jason Witten. The winner of the Payton Award will be announced live before Super Bowl XLII, on FOX on Feb. 3.

"Being selected as a finalist for the 2007 Walter Payton Man of the Year is a tremendous honor for me and for my foundation," Ward said in a statement. "My charitable efforts dually represent the values that my mother instilled in me as a young child and my desire to make the world a better place for all children, in particular those of mixed race who face discrimination in Korea. I hope my nomination raises even more awareness of this cause that is so near and dear to my heart."
* Cedrick Wilson has received a protection order against his girlfriend, Lindsay Paulat. It'd be easy to say that this is just another reason why the Steelers should part ways with Wilson, but in reality, this is in no way his fault. Who knows the dynamics of their relationship, but Wilson was not at the scene when his girlfriend engaged in a 12 hour standoff with police, that included her firing .38 caliber gun shots from Wilson's home in Pine.

* Although it's nearly a week old, Football Brainiac examines the Steelers' Time of Possesion and 3rd Down % numbers from 2007. Still hard to figure out how we were able to possess the ball so well, not turn it over, convert on 3rd down, and still only manage to be a good, not great, team.
