Yup, you read that right. When Ben Roethlisberger makes his 2010 season debut next Sunday, he may find himself squaring off against a rookie quarterback making his first ever NFL start. That would be Browns' third-round draft pick, Colt McCoy, who looks like he'll be Cleveland's Week 6 starter against the Steelers as a result of injuries to Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme.
"It's only the Steelers, right?" Mangini said with a perfect touch of sarcasm. "Coming off a bye week? They don't blitz much."
My, oh my. What a stuff spot for McCoy if he does in fact start against a rested and angry Steelers' defense. Don't forget, Browns' President Mike Holmgren said after the Draft that McCoy would not see the field in 2010, only get stronger and immerse himself in the team's playbook. Change of plans!
Who knows, McCoy is so green that he might just get rid of the ball before disaster can strike. But if he tries to make plays with his feet (which he loved to do at Texas), or if he hesitates even just slightly with his progressions - well, then it could get ugly for him and the Browns.
Still tied up with other work, but more from me soon. Let this nice piece of news kickoff our week of Week 6 previews as we anxiously await the Steelers' return next Sunday.
