BTSC 2011 Community Mock Draft Pick No. 18 -- San Diego Chargers Select Ryan Kerrigan, DE/OLB, Purdue

Many thanks to J Lee for the solid selection for San Diego at No. 18. I don't think the Chargers would regret this pick one bit. Good stuff guys and gals, thanks for the hard work. Let's change gears from this submission by one of BTSC's older readers to a lad that I believe is in his teens. Next up: the New York Giants, represented by paulamalu. -Michael B.-

Kerrigan will give the Chargers another option at the outside linebacker position as an edge rusher opposite Shaun Phillips if Larry English underperforms like he did last year. Kerrigan can develop as a back up defensive end along side Vaughn Martin for now and maybe fill Jacques Cesaire position someday as he gains strength. This versatility will make him an ideal pick as the Chargers, a defense that needs help in their front seven in this draft as they deal with likely losing free agents.  Moving forward the team will need to pick players for the immediate future, as they likely won't be able to re-sign all their free agents.

Kerrigan also has good instincts on the line. Most of the time has a good read and initial reaction after the snap. Like so many guys his size, he'll most likely convert to the outside linebacker in the NFL. The problem with him will most likely be the injury issues that he had in college. It didn't show much difference in his pass rushing ability at Purdue, but the NFL is a whole different animal.
