SB Nation Bloggers Mock Draft: Steelers on the clock at 48

Eddie Lacy may be gone, but the spirit of the Triumverate lives on. With just Dallas to go before the Steelers make their pick, anticipation increases as three main targets sit in prime position.

Dave Martin

Alabama running back Eddie Lacy would have been tempting, no doubt, but with him having gone (as we expected) to St. Louis at 46, the Cowboys are walking their pick up to the podium now.

The Triumverate's Big Board has been whittled down to three players for this pick. Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, and a pair of safeties, Florida's Matt Elam and LSU's Eric Reid.

Talk about value.

The NCAA Defensive Player of the Year, and a Heisman Trophy finalist, or two accomplished safeties, both of whom would fill the need the Steelers have in this draft to establish depth, and provide a young safety to groom as a possible replacement for either Troy Polamalu or Ryan Clark - or both.

Steel34D has been pacing around the war room, chugging coffee and Snickers bars, consumed with the enormity of this pick. We've been waiting with bated breath, despite a brief alarm when StoneColdSteel broke into the South Side complex in an attempt to circumvent the Triumverate, and gave orders to draft Te'o.

We looked at each other (as police escorted him away) and said, "Ya know, maybe that's a sign that Te'o is the guy."

Or, maybe we're going to have a tough time making the "right" pick in the eyes of the fans, but an even tougher time making a "bad" pick.

Damontre Moore (Dolphins), Johnthan Banks (Buccaneers), Kawann Short (Panthers) and Terron Armstead (Chargers) went 42-45 before Lacy at 46.

Are there any other surprise picks up our collective sleeves?
