Steelers sign WR Tyler Shaw after placing Plaxico Burress on IR

While the Steelers continue to work on depth problems at offensive tackle and tight end, they used the roster spot vacated by Plaxico Burress on another wide receiver.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed Plaxico Burress on IR, officially ending his 2013 season.  The team filled his roster spot by signing another WR Tyler Shaw.

Burress tore his rotator cuff during practice late last week at training camp.  He had surgery on Monday was placed on IR on Tuesday.  The team is already expecting Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders to lead the receiver room.  They drafted Markus Wheaton and Justin Brown in 2013, and both have looked impressive in practice and the preseason game against the New York Giants.  The team is also keeping a close eye on undrafted free-agents Derek Moye and J.D. Woods.  Even Reggie Dunn caught a pass last Saturday night.

Even with a pile of injured bodies at tight end and a significant lack of quality depth at offensive tackle, the Steelers used Burress's roster spot to sign Shaw.

The 6-0, 180 pound receiver was an undrafted free agent out of Northwest Missouri State who originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals.  His 40-time at the Scouting Combine registered 4.37 seconds on the stopwatch.  He was the 84th best receiver in the draft class according to nfldraftscout.com.  Shaw was waived by the Cardinals last week.

Shaw will have to make a serious impact to bypass the receivers in front of him on the depth chart, who all looked good in the loss to the Giants - all except David Gilreath.
