Steelers roster cuts, updates and open thread

A listing of the running roster cuts the Steelers are expected to make Saturday.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Update 10:00 p.m. - With the 53-man roster the Steelers currently have, what might the gameday inactives look like through the beginning of the season?

Update 9:08 p.m. - The punting competition between the young Drew Butler and old veteran Brian Moorman fizzled out vs. Carolina, with Moorman conceding the battle more than Butler winning it. Rebecca Rollett digs into how the two compared with the rest of the league last year.

Update 7:00 p.m. - Folks weren't sure if there would be enough room for Felix Jones to make the 53, but the Dwyer release took care of that. So what exactly did Jones show off to earn himself a spot?

Update 5:43 p.m. - How in the world is Guy Whimper still with the team? We can't say for sure, but there seems to be a trend whenever the Steelers sign a veteran free agent during the offseason.

Update 5:12 p.m. - A great bit of feature commentary by Ivan Cole on why we shouldn't have been surprised by the release of Jonathan Dwyer. He played a bit too much in the preseason.

Update 5:02 p.m. - Some early practice squad predictions...which are always fun. Unless you're Alan Baxter, who should be at least a little ticked off right now.

Update: 4:38 p.m. - Loni Fangupo takes out 2012 4th round pick Alameda Ta'amu for a roster spot. Are we celebrating Fangupo's rise to prominence, or a blown Steelers 4th round pick?

Update 3:51 p.m. - The Steelers have released:

Jonathan Dwyer, Alameda Ta'amu, Terry Hawthorne, Justin Brown, Brian Moorman, Josh Victorian, Marshall McFadden, Jamie McCoyReggie Dunn, Mike Golic Jr, Joe Madsen, Chris Hubbard, Brian Arnfelt, Alan Baxter, Terence Garvin, Devin Smith Kashif Moore, Alvester Alexander, Nathan Overbay, Joe Long, Brian Rolle, Ross Ventrone.

Update: 3:44 p.m. - The Steelers have waived running back Jonathan Dwyer.

Update 3:18 p.m - Steelers linebacker Marshall McFadden was waived Saturday, according to his agency and Adam Caplan.

A bit of a surprise, McFadden was seen as a top back-up contender behind Larry Foote and Lawrence Timmons. For what it's worth, Pro Football Focus did not score McFadden well against the run this preseason.
