Steelers position battles: Landry Jones looks for a big performance against Giants to hold off John Parker Wilson

Landry Jones wasn't thought to be in any kind position battle on the Steelers' roster. He was to be the team's No. 3 quarterback, learning behind Ben Roethlisberger and Bruce Gradkowski.

John Parker Wilson, brought in this offseason as a training camp body, is reportedly looking impressive, and if Jones wasn't a fourth-round draft pick, some might even suggest Wilson has the leg up on that third QB position.

It won't happen...right?

If Jones wants to remove all doubts, it needs to happen Saturday, when the Steelers host the New York Giants in Pittsburgh. Both will get extended looks with other roster hopefuls, as one of the more out-of-nowhere training camp battles becomes one of the more talked about competitions in training camp.

With a slew of talented young wide receivers all pretty much on the outside looking into a fifth receiver spot the Steelers did not keep out of training camp last year, both passers will have eager and willing players hoping to make both of them look good.

Perhaps that can alleviate some of the pressure on Landry, who perhaps isn't truly having to compete for a position the team is hoping develops as a long-term back-up. No one told Wilson that, however.

The Steelers haven't had a real legitimate competition for a third string quarterback position in quite a while, so this should be interesting, even if the Steelers don't feel the need to cut their fourth round pick.

Right?
