2014 NFL Mock Draft: Post Senior Bowl edition sees a familiar face heading to Pittsburgh

1. Houston Texans - Blake Bortles QB, Central Florida

Team needs: QB/RT/OLB/ILB/RB/LG

This pick will come down to whoever has the final say within the organization. Teddy Bridgewater is currently the consensus top rated QB but it's rumored that new head coach Bill O'Brien favors Blake Bortles while the Texans owner Bob McNair likes Johnny Manziel. GM Rick Smith's drafting philosophy of taking the best player available would suggest Jadeveon Clowney. I have to imagine that during the interview process O'Brien was asked his opinion on the first pick so if the organization wasn't willing to let him have his way then they wouldn't have hired him in the first place.

2. St. Louis Rams - Jake Matthews OT, Texas A&M

Team needs: OT/S/LG/WR/DT/#3CB/SLB

The Rams should be looking to draft Jake Matthews, Sammy Watkins, or even Jadeveon Clowney. They will also be looking to trade back. Jake Long is coming back from an ACL tear and Jake Matthews is about as safe a prospect as you could ask for. Sammy Watkins could be the true number one WR they've been looking for. Clowney would be a long-term investment if they can't afford to resign Robert Quinn or they can't renegotiate Chris Long's contract which gets very expensive in it's final years. The most likely scenario is the Rams trading back with Atlanta, Tampa Bay, or Minnesota, whoever is willing to give up the most for Clowney should the Texans not take him.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars - Teddy Bridgewater QB, Louisville

Team needs: QB/DE/RB/RT/LB/LG/DT/OC

Jacksonville needs a quarterback plain and simple. They will be able to get either Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles, or Johnny Manziel here. If they decide the talent level between the top QB's is negligent they could wait until the second round to address the QB position and take care of their second biggest need and draft a pass-rusher like Clowney or Anthony Barr. Given how many holes they have on the roster they could look to trade back and picks up some extra selections.

4. Cleveland Browns - Johnny Manziel QB, Texas A&M

Team needs: QB/RB/ILB/RG/#2CB/WR

The Browns are rumored to be enamored with Johnny Manziel so as long as he's available, which he should be, he will be the pick. With their second first round pick the Browns will most likely be looking for an offensive weapon to aide Manziel.

5. Oakland Raiders - Sammy Watkins WR, Clemson

Team needs: QB/RB/WR/DE/DT/LG/S/CB

With the top 3 QB's off of the board the ghost of Al Davis would be very pleased with drafting someone like Sammy Watkins, who is a supremely gifted athlete but comes with some character concerns. They traded back in the first round last year in an attempt to fill more holes and could do so again this year.

6. Atlanta Falcons - Anthony Barr DE/OLB, UCLA

Team needs: DE/OT/OG/RB/DT/LB/TE

The Falcons need an impact pass-rusher or an offensive tackle with this pick and will hope that Clowney, Matthews or Anthony Barr is available. Barr is a perfect fit for the Falcons defense and would assume the hybrid DE/OLB role that Kroy Biermann was playing before he tore his Achilles. The Falcons are rumored to be coveting Michael Johnson and/or Tyson Jackson in free agency. If they should sign one or either this pick should be Matthews or Greg Robinson.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Jadeveon Clowney DE, South Carolina

Team needs: DE/TE/SLB/DT/OT/LG

Mike Glennon has shown enough flashes that new head coach Lovie Smith will be probably wouldn't take a quarterback here. Tampa Bay has shown a willingness to make moves on draft day before so they are a prime candidate to trade up for Jadeveon Clowney, who would be Lovie Smith's Julius Peppers. The Bucs keep swinging and missing on pass-rushers in the draft so it is still a big need for them.

8. Minnesota Vikings - Khalil Mack DE/OLB, Buffalo

Team needs: QB/DE/SLB/LG/SS/CB

New head coach Mike Zimmer will probably want his own guy at QB but GM Rick Spielman's job is on the line so he can't afford to completely quit on Christian Ponder or draft another QB in the first round so soon after Ponder. Plus there are much better prospects available that the available QB's. Defensively they could lose Jared Allen and Kevin Williams to free agency and will definitely let the underachieving Chris Cook walk. They could make a play for Jadeveon Clowney or Anthony Barr but should be able to sit back and take Khalil Mack here to upgrade at SLB.

9. Buffalo Bills - Ha'Sean "Ha Ha" Clinton-Dix S, Alabama

Team needs: RDE/FS/OG/TE/WLB/#3CB

Buffalo won't be able to fill their biggest need in the first round as there currently aren't any guards worth a top-25 selection. Scott Chandler is a free agent who needed to be replaced anyway so they could draft Eric Ebron here for their young QB. Defensively they'll lose Jairus Byrd to free agency. It may be a slight reach but Clinton-Dix would fill a big need. They could trade back a few spots and get him or Eric Ebron or simply take the best player available like Greg Robinson to upgrade at RT.

10. Detroit Lions - Mike Evans WR, Texas A&M

Team needs: #2WR/CB/OC/SLB/TE

Detroit has been looking for another presence in the passing game to take the pressure off of Calvin Johnson. They've drafted a few wide receiver busts in the middle rounds in the past. With Brandon Pettigrew a free agent the Lions are in the market for a tight end as well. Mike Evans has the size that Detroit seems to prefer in their WR's but is probably not the highest rated player available. Jace Amaro or Eric Ebron could play the hybrid TE/WR role and both have the Gronk/Jimmy Graham ability to take over the passing game from the tight end position if they do not resign Pettigrew.

11. Tennessee Titans - Greg Robinson OT, Auburn

Team needs: QB/OLB/S/CB/OT/RB

This pick will largely hinge on what the Titans future plans are for Michael Roos and David Stewart. Stewart is a free agent this offseason while Roos is a free agent next year. If the Titans plan to let either of them go they could draft a replacement here. Another free agency issue is with Alterraun Verner. He's likely to have priced himself out of Tennessee and the Titans will need to replace him with someone like Justin Gilbert. They also need personal for Ray Horton's new 3-4 defense.

12. New York Giants - Kony Ealy DE, Missouri

Team needs: OT/LB/DE/DT/CB/S/OC/TE

The Giants could definitely stand to take advantage of a great crop of offensive tackles. William Beatty broke his leg in the last game of the season but wasn't playing very well before that anyway. The Giants could draft Taylor Lewan, shift Beatty to RT, and move Justin Pugh to OG. They have a tendency to draft pass-rushers and with Justin Tuck and Linval Josephs free agency the Giants will most likely need to replace them with either Kony Ealy, Ra'Shede Hageman, or Louis Nix.

13. St. Louis Rams - Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State

Team needs: OT/S/LG/WR/DT/#3CB/SLB

If he's available Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix would likely be the pick as an upgrade in the secondary next to T.J. McDonald. The Rams would also likely be looking for a replacement for the disappointing Kendall Langford at DT.

14. Chicago Bears - Justin Gilbert CB, Oklahoma State

Team needs: DT/CB/S/SLB/OC

One of Chicago's biggest issues is at DT. Henry Melton is a free agent coming back from a serious injury. If he isn't resigned or if the Bears think he can't come back from injury they will definitely need to replace him with Louis Nix or Ra'Shede Hageman. Nix is more in line with what Melton brings to the table but he doesn't have the pass-rushing upside that comes with Hageman. They also have needs at SLB and CB and would be in the running for either C.J. Mosley or Justin Gilbert. Recently GM Phil Emery mentioned getting younger on defense through the draft and with Charles Tillman a 33 year old free agent drafting Gilbert makes the most sense.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers - Louis Nix lll NT, Notre Dame

Team needs: OT/NT/CB/S/WR

While this pick could definitely be influenced by free agency the law of averages says it will most likely come down to drafting philosophy. Colbert & Co. typically spend early round picks on front seven defensive players and offensive linemen, of course a truly elite prospect could always trump tendency or need. Despite injuries and some very bad rough patches the offensive line started to come together by the end of the season and with the newly hired O-line miracle maker that is Mike Munchak I'm sure the Steelers will bypass taking a lineman early. Of course should the impossible happened and Jake Matthews is still available he should be a no-brainer pick.

The biggest issue on the front seven of the defense is the free agency of Ziggy Hood and Brett Keisel. It's conceivable that both could be resigned but at least one of them should. If Omar Khan can work his magic and keep Jason Worilds that would be great but even if he can't it'll be Jarvis Jones and Woodley starting at OLB. Woodley's contract carries too much dead money to release him. If Anthony Barr or maybe even Khalil Mack fell they could be picked but with Jones and Woodley on board they likely spend a mid-to-late-round pick on a DE/OLB tweener project. They could draft C.J. Mosley which would be an upgrade next to Lawrence Timmons but they do have the platoon of Larry Foote, Vince Williams, Sean Spence, and Terence Garvin so unless they feel like Mosley is in that elite category he won't be an option.

The Steelers will definitely have to face the issue at CB at some point in this draft. If he were available Justin Gilbert fits the mold of the type of CB that they seem to prefer, Darqueze Dennard does not however, but they generally wait until the middle rounds to draft a tall, lanky, raw but athletic CB from a non-powerhouse school. Eric Ebron would be very enticing to be an eventual successor to Heath Miller but he probably has 4 good years left before he needs to be replaced and with the rumors that his contract will be extended it's unlikely the Steelers would be looking for his replacement here. Manny Sanders is a free agent but as with CB's the Steelers prefer to wait until the middle rounds to draft WR's but could certainly kick the tires on Marqise Lee.

Based on everything above the likely candidate is Louis Nix. Steve McLendon is a decent NT but would be much better off play DE which would shore up that position should the Steelers not be able to resign both Hood and Keisel. Just like the Steelers wanted to get back to running the ball on offense they just as likely want to get back to stopping the run on defense.

Louis Nix is Casey Hampton incarnate. "Irish Chocolate" as his Notre Dame teammates call him, may only ever be a two-down player, although he continues to shed weight and improve his conditioning every season since his freshman year and has the potential to play all three downs, but he is a necessary tool to put opposing offenses in 3rd-and-long situations instead of 3rd-and-short. He is considered to be an elite player so getting him at 15 is a steal even if he does take a breather on 3rd down.

16. Dallas Cowboys - Ra'Shede Hageman DT, Minnesota

Team needs: DT/LDE/SS/RT/LB

Dallas needs to upgrade their defense. If Monte Kiffin survives another season as defensive coordinator Timmy Jernigan would be a perfect fit as a 3 technique DT. They could also draft C.J. Mosley as an upgrade over Bruce Carter or Ernie Sims. Another issue is Anthony Spencer's free agency. If Jerry Jones fires Kiffin and Dallas reverts back to a 3-4 defense than Dallas could draft Louis Nix to play NT. The player available who makes the most sense is Hageman. His burst at the snap and pass-rushing prowess are a good fit for Kiffin's defense and he could play DE or NT in a 3-4 should Jerry Jones fire Kiffin.

17. Baltimore Ravens - C.J. Mosley LB, Alabama

Team needs: OT/#2WR/TE/SS/OC

Baltimore has several free agency decisions to make. Both Eugene Monroe and Michael Oher are free agents and it's likely the Ravens will resign Monroe and like Oher walk.Their top three TE's are free agents as is Arthur Jones and Darryl Smith. The Ravens could take Taylor Lewan or Eric Ebron but they should draft C.J. Mosley if he's available. Smith was a great replacement for the retired Ray Lewis but he'll be 33 years old and will likely be looking for one final pay day after resurrecting his career in Baltimore. Arthur Brown could certainly still develop but they will still need another starter. They could also use this pick to find a compliment to Torrey Smith.

18. New York Jets - Eric Ebron TE, North Carolina

Team needs: ROLB/WR/TE/S/ILB/RT/OG

The Jets need weapons for Geno Smith and should be targeting the highest rated TE or WR. Rex Ryan must do everything in his power so that Geno succeeds at QB. They could also need an upgrade at ROLB, definitely at safety, and could possibly draft C.J. Mosley if he's available because David Harris and DeMario Davis were both terrible in coverage this season.

19. Miami Dolphins - Taylor Lewan OT, Michigan

Team needs: OT/OG/DT/TE/CB

Miami's offensive line is a mess. Jonathan Martin was shut down for the season because of the Richie Incognito fiasco and could be moved in the offseason but they could stand to upgrade every position except for center. Given what a disappointment Mike Wallace has been the Dolphins could be shopping for another wide receiver. They'll also need at least one defensive tackle because Paul Soliai and Randy Starks are both free agents and Miami will only most likely be able to afford to resign one of them. Brent Grimes and Nolan Carroll are free agents as well so CB is another position of need for Miami.

20. Arizona Cardinals - Cyrus Kouandjio OT, Alabama

Team needs: QB/OT/OLB/RB

Arizona has needed to upgrade the offensive tackle position for years, even before trading Levi Brown to the Steelers. Defensively they need to upgrade their outside linebackers. John Abraham has played very well but he'll be 36 years old next season.They'll also need a long-term successor to Carson Palmer.

21. Green Bay Packers - Stephon Tuitt DE/DT, Notre Dame

Team needs: ILB/S/DE/TE

Offensively the Packers will need a replacement for Jermichael Finley and Ted Thompson is never afraid to stock up on linemen. This pick will most likely be used to bolster the defense. Inside linebacker and safety are the big issues of need but G.B. will likely target a defensive lineman. Yes they drafted Datone Jones in the first round last year but B.J. Raji is going to command a lot of money on the open market and they'll need a replacement to play the DE/NT position that Raji plays which is vital to their defense.

22. Philadelphia Eagles - Darqueze Dennard CB, Michigan State

Team needs: OLB/S/CB/WR

The Eagles will need to replace injury-prone free agent Jeremy Macklin and Riley Cooper at WR but this pick should be devoted to the defense, either at outside linebacker, cornerback, or safety if Clinton-Dix magically falls.

23. Kansas City Chiefs - Marqise Lee WR, USC

Team needs: WR/DE/S/OT/ILB/#2CB

Andy Reid likes drafting linemen, wide receivers, and cornerbacks early. He took took Eric Fisher number one overall last year but he has struggled and Brandon Albert will be a free agent so they could be looking to take another OT in the first round. They could take a TE or a WR given Dwayne Bowe's struggles. And defensively they may need to replace free agent to be Tyson Jackson.

24. Cincinnati Bengals - Aaron Donald DT, Pittsburgh

Team needs: CB/LB/RDE/OC/LT/DT

If the Bengals fails to resign Anthony Collins this pick will likely be the top rated OT. Defensively the Bengals could have a lot of issues at cornerback. Leon Hall will be coming back from a second Achilles tear while Dre Kirkpatrick has had an up but mostly down career so far while Terrence Newman and Adam Jones are only getting older. And even though they drafted Margus Hunt they could still take a DE when they lose Michael Johnson to free agency. At DT Geno Atkins will be coming back from a torn ACL while Domata Peko is starting to show his age while entering the final year of his contract. If he were a little bigger Aaron Donald would be the first DT taken and a top 10 pick.

25. San Diego Chargers - Antonio Richardson OT, Tennessee

Team needs: LOLB/LT/CB/OG/RB/TE/SS

The Chargers hit on D.J. Fluker but still need more upgrades on the offensive line and they simply have to do something about their defense. They need to upgrade the pass-rush especially if Melvin Ingram takes some time to come back from injury. Their secondary is an even greater issue so they could go with a cornerback or a safety here.

26. Cleveland Browns (via Indianapolis Colts) - Kelvin Benjamin WR, Florida State

Team needs: QB/RB/ILB/#2CB/OG

When teams use their first pick on a quarterback they typically use their next pick on help for him, either in the form of a pass-catcher or an offensive lineman. Benjamin combines a 6-foot-5 frame with 4.4 speed and would draw coverage away from Josh Gordon.

27. New Orleans Saints - Scott Crichton DE/OLB, Oregon State

Team needs: OLB/CB/FS/ILB

Rob Ryan has done wonders transforming the Saints defense this past season but more needs to be done to continue the upward trend, primarily at OLB. As such the Saints should be looking to draft the highest rated rusher which should be Kyle Van Noy, Scott Crichton, and Trent Murphy.

28. Carolina Panthers - Allen Robinson WR, Penn State

Team needs: OT/WR/CB/S/WLB/RG

Left tackle Jordan Gross is a free agent who is contemplating retirement. Even if he does resign to a short-term deal the Panthers need to find a successor at left tackle. They also need a long-term successor for Steve Smith and need to continue overhauling their secondary. And it's likely they won't be able to afford to retain free agent Greg Hardy.

29. New England Patriots - Jace Amaro TE, Texas Tech

Team needs: TE/DT/S/CB/WR/OC

New England has to do something about the tight end position. It's such an important cog in their offense and with Aaron Hernandez rotting in prison and Gronk's injury history they should be spending an early pick on one, especially if Jace Amaro or Austin Seferian-Jenkins are available.

30. San Francisco 49ers - Trent Murphy DE/OLB, Stanford

Team needs: CB/#2WR

San Francisco is a prime candidate for a trade back. They don't have any pressing needs but could use another wide receiver and they need to think about the long-term future at cornerback. Carlos Rogers is 32 years old and the 49ers need someone to groom behind him. They could also use a youthful compliment to Michael Crabtree in the WR corps. The 49ers have shown interest in Trent Murphy and could use him as a possible replacement given all the issues going on with Aldon Smith.

31. Denver Broncos - Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB, Nebraska

Team needs: CB/LG/DT/RDE/ILB/S

Left guard is the Broncos only need on offense so this pick will likely be used on defense. They need upgrades all along the interior of their defense and may have issues at cornerback as will. Champ Bailey and Quentin Jammer are only getting older while DRC is a free agent. SJB started to gain notoriety at the Senior Bowl practices but should be well known by all after the combine and could go higher as long as he runs a sub-4.6 40. With every team wanting their own Richard Sherman-type at CB expect the big CB's to start getting looks earlier in the draft.

32. Seattle Seahawks - Zach Martin OG/OT, Notre Dame

Team needs: RT/OG/LDE/TE/WR

Offensively Seattle needs to upgrade both OG spots and at right tackle. And Russell Wilson could use some more playmakers at WR and TE. Defensively they are just about set but will likely have to replace Michael Bennett who is a free agent. Zach Martin was by far the best offensive lineman at the Senior Bowl.

Round 2:

33. Houston Texans - Kyle Van Noy DE/LB, BYU

The Texans need to upgrade their pass-rush or replace Ben Tate here. Van Noy could fill the void at OLB or ILB.

34. Washington Redskins - Ryan Shazier LB, Ohio State

Team needs: CB/ILB/WR/RG

Washington's secondary is it's biggest issue. They've got a couple of young safeties that need to make the leap in their second years but at CB Josh Wilson and DeAngelo Hall are both free agents. At ILB London Fletcher is finally retiring while Perry Riley is a free agent. On offense they need to upgrade at RG and need more weapons for RG3.

35. Cleveland Browns - David Yankey OG/OT, Stanford

Cleveland should draft a RB here if they don't sign Ben Tate, who they are rumored to like, otherwise it should be an OG, ILB, or a CB.

36. Oakland Raiders - Ka'Deem Carey RB, Arizona

Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings are both free agents.

37. Atlanta Falcons - Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE, Washington

The Falcons need a replacement for Tony Gonzalez.

38. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Xavier Su'a-filo OG, UCLA

T.B. would love for Ryan Shazier, an OT, or a TE to be available here. They also may release Carl Nicks.

39. Jacksonville Jaguars - Carlos Hyde RB, Ohio State

MJD is a free agent.

40. Minnesota Vikings - Derek Carr QB, Fresno State

The Vikings may have to trade up to get him but there's a big drop off after Derek Carr.

41. Buffalo Bills - Gabe Jackson OG, Mississippi State

Offensive guard is Buffalo's biggest need.

42. Tennessee Titans - Marcus Roberson CB, Florida

Alterraun Verner may be too expensive to resign.

43. New York Giants - Morgan Moses OT, Virginia

The Giants need upgrades along the offensive line.

44. St. Louis Rams - Jason Verrett CB, TCU

The Rams should be looking for an OG, WR, S, or a CB here.

45. Detroit Lions - Trevor Reilly DE, Utah

Willie Young is a free agent and Detroit needs a third DE to rotate with Devin Taylor and Ezekiel Ansah.

46. Pittsburgh Steelers - Calvin Pryor S, Louisville

It's likely that Ryan Clark will not be resigned this offseason. His play was in decline this past season so it was time the Steelers started looking for his replacement anyway. They drafted Shamarko Thomas last year but he is much better suited to be the in-the-box defender that will succeed Troy Polamalu once he retires. Calvin Pryor is big, physical, and rangy enough to be a center-fielding compliment to Shamarko Thomas.

47. Dallas Cowboys - Michael Sam DE, Missouri

Anthony Spencer is a free agent. If Dallas switched to a 3-4 they could take Dee Ford instead.

48. Baltimore Ravens - Odell Beckham Jr. WR, LSU

The Ravens need another WR.

49. New York Jets - Brandin Cooks WR, Oregon State

The Jets should continue to build the offense around Geno Smith.

50. Miami Dolphins - Kyle Fuller CB, Virginia Tech

Both Brent Grimes and Nolan Carroll are free agents.

51. Chicago Bears - Ego Ferguson DT, LSU

Henry Melton is a free agent coming back from injury.

The Colts biggest issues are in the secondary which will be compounded if they do not resign Vontae Davis. Offensively they need better protection for Andrew Luck and must start thinking about a long-term successor to Reggie Wayne.

60. Carolina Panthers - Loucheiz Purifoy CB, Florida

This pick should be the highest rated CB or OT.

61. San Fransisco 49ers - Craig Loston S, LSU

Donte Whitner is a free agent.

62. New England Patriots - Travis Swanson OC, Arkansas

Ryan Wendell is a free agent who needs to be replaced anyway.

63. Denver Broncos - Davante Adams WR, Fresno State

The Broncos won't be able to afford to resign Eric Decker.

64. Seattle Seahawks - Paul Richardson WR, Colorado

Percy Harvin is injury-prone.

Round 3:

65. Houston Texans - Tre Mason RB, Auburn

Ben Tate is a free agent and Arian Foster is injury-prone.

66. Washington Redskins - Jarvis Landry WR, LSU

Jay Gruden needs more weapons for RG3. Santana Moss is a 35 year old free agent.

If Oakland fails to resign LaMarr Houston they'll need 2 DE's.

Craig Robertson is terrible and D'Qwell Jackson is a poor fit for a 3-4 defense.

Jard Allen is a free agent.

73. Buffalo Bills - Troy Niklas TE, Notre Dame

Scott Chandler is a free agent who should be replaced anyway.

74. New York Giants - Carl Bradford OLB, Arizona State

Eventually the Giants will have to do something about their linebacker situation.

75. St. Louis Rams - Deone Bucannon S, Washington State

The Rams need a compliment to T.J. McDonald.

76. Detroit Lions - Russell Bodine OC, North Carolina

Dominic Raiola is a 35 year old free agent.

Pittsburgh Steelers Compensatory Pick - Pierre Desir CB, Lindenwood

The Steelers will likely receive a compensatory pick at the end of the third round for losing Mike Wallace in free agency.

Pierre is coming off of a great week at the Senior Bowl that has made him a hot prospect. He fits the profile of the type of player the Steelers look for in a CB. If he continues to shine at the combine he could find himself sneaking into the second round.
