Rice cornerback Phillip Gaines will visit the Steelers Thursday, alongside Minnesota defensive lineman Ra'Shede Hageman, as the Steelers dig into the final weeks of preparation before the 2014 NFL Draft begins May 8.
Gaines is an excellent candidate perhaps meant for the middle rounds. He won't be considered the strongest cornerback available but he shows excellent instincts and anticipatory skills coming from a pass-heavy conference.
The Steelers are in need of a cornerback in this draft, and there is some reason to think, despite a well-disputed top-five list at the position in this draft, Gaines may deserve inclusion as well. The Steelers apparently think it's at least somewhat valid, considering they're bringing him in for a visit.
If the Steelers view the overall level of cornerbacks in this draft as being solid, as many pundits are, they may wait until the third or fourth round to select one, and may even take multiple cornerbacks.
