The Steelers love position flexibility. Jack of All Trades is better than Master of None.
Perhaps not literally. Still, the Steelers are going to give every opportunity to a young player who wants to prove value in any position. Right now, that's wide receiver Justin Brown.
He's certainly an attractive option to other teams right now who perhaps haven't invested heavily in the position over the last two years - a third round pick (Markus Wheaton), a fourth round pick (Martavis Bryant) and a free agent (Lance Moore) to go along with second-team All Pro Antonio Brown.
While Brown looks to fight through veteran Darrius Heyward-Bey and incumbent Derrick Moye - and appears to be leading that battle - he got looks with the first team from the slot receiver position Monday, despite being built more for the split end.
Adding another Jack of All Trades to the 46-53 members of the Steelers' final roster is a good idea. Wheaton is likely the team's starting split end and Bryant, at this point in his career, is likely as cemented into the split end position as anyone else on the roster. Adding some depth behind Moore as needed keeps Brown where he is in the event of an injury to Moore.
That's getting ahead of things a bit, but Brown has been impressive enough in camp (not spectacularly so, mind you) to see the true ceiling of his potential.
That could be an indication of the team's willingness to let Brown provide even more reason to keep him around.
He's perhaps the player to keep an eye on most intently during the Steelers' upcoming preseason opener against the Giants.
