Titans hire former Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt as head coach

Former Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians followed in the footsteps of his former boss, Ken Whisenhunt when he was hired as an NFL head coach for the first time in his career.

Whisenhunt is now following Arians.

The last two Steelers' offensive coordinators are now both NFL head coaches - Arians with the Arizona Cardinals and Whisenhunt - his second stint as head coach - with the Tennessee Titans.

Whisenhunt's hiring came amid speculation he was headed for the Detroit Lions. According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, some conflict came between him and Detroit over the idea Whisenhunt wanted to employ a 3-4 defense, contrary to the Lions' well-drafted 4-3 scheme they used under former coach Jim Schwartz.

Arians and Whisenhunt worked under former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher from 2004-06, the last year seeing Arians as the wide receivers coach and Whisenhunt as the offensive coordinator. Whisenhunt left Pittsburgh for Arizona after losing out on Cowher's vacated spot to current coach Mike Tomlin.

Tomlin's Steelers defeated Whisenhunt's Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

Whisenhunt's season ended Sunday as the offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers, who fell to the host Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional playoffs.
