After the announcement today that the Steelers were to resign Guard/Center Cody Wallace, Ed Bouchette tweeted this.
#Steelers liked how Cody Wallace played C after Fernando Velasco's Achilles injury last season. Velasco still rehabbing and not healthy
— Ed Bouchette (@EdBouchette) March 12, 2014
First of all, it obviously indicates that the Steelers were impressed with Wallace's play over the last 3 weeks of the season. But it may also give us a clue as to the chances of Center Fernando Velasco returning to the Steelers.
Velasco was signed in free agency after starting Center Maurkice Pouncey was injured in week 1. He performed admirably under the circumstances for 12 weeks until he too suffered a season ending Achilles tear against the Ravens on Thanksgiving.
He became a bit of a cult hero for Steelers fans to cling to during an up and down season, but Bouchette may be indicating his brief stint with the Steelers is over.
It would appear the Steelers are not interested in an "unhealthy" Velasco at this point, and perhaps he is not as far along in his recovery as they would have liked. That, combined with Wallace's impressive performances may essentially signal the end for Velasco in Pittsburgh.
