On Sunday night, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was arrested for driving while intoxicated and for possession of a controlled substance.
The 54-year-old Colts owner was booked just after 3:00 a.m. Monday morning. His bond was set for $22,500.
Irsay has already taken to Twitter following the incident, denying that he was intoxicated while driving Sunday night. Conversely, Indianapolis Star sports reporter Bob Kravitz tweeted that Irsay has been struggling "for some time now."
Irsay's father Robert purchased the Colts in 1971 following the team's win in Super Bowl V and played a role in the team moving from Baltimore to Indianapolis during the middle of the night in 1984. Jim Irsay was the team's vice president and general manager a month after the controversial move. Irsay took over the team's day-to-day operations after his father suffered a stroke in 1995. He became the NFL's youngest owner at 37-years-old when he took over the team's ownership in 1997.
Irsay's Colts have enjoyed one of the more successful runs in the NFL during his time at the helm, winning Super Bowl XLI while winning at least 10 games each season from 2002-2010. One of Irsay's most pivotal moments as owner was when he drafted Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf in the 1998 NFL Draft.
The Colts have had several memorable playoff battles against the Steelers during Irsay's reign. The Steelers defeated the Colts 20-16 in one of the greatest championship games in NFL history in January of 1996. Pittsburgh upended Indianapolis 42-14 the following season in a playoff re-match. The Steelers blitzed Manning and the Colts in a 21-18 playoff victory in 2005 en route to the team's Super Bowl XL victory.
Alcoholism unfortunately has also been a part of Irsay's past. His father struggled with alcoholism and Irsay himself had drinking problems before he stated to have quit the habit about 15 years ago.
