Whimper was a 4th round Draft pick of the New York Giants in the 2006 draft, but was cut by the Giants in 2010. After that he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars , where he played for three years, starting a total of 22 games. After being cut by the Jaguars , Whimper signed with the Steelers last off season.
Whimper has a total of 24 career starts, and appeared in 11 games for the Steelers last season, starting in 2. He should provide solid depth and experience along the offensive line provided he makes it out of training camp.
As Ray Fittipaldo points out, the Steelers now have 8 offensive lineman under contract, and this move could have an effect on their draft strategy come the NFL Draft in May.
The Steelers have 8 O-linemen under contract for next season. Can't see them drafting one early but maybe a developmental guy mid to late.
