Great teams overcome

This is the mantra that I have to keep preaching to myself as I watch game after game where the referees should be fined instead of the players. Last week it was defenseless receiver calls that all went one way. This week it was the Wheaton TD that didn't hold up. Every time I see the replay, there is no evidence that Wheaton stepped out of bounds prior to the catch. I'd love to see another replay that reveals otherwise because this is the kind of thing that really gets my blood boiling. Wheaton, a young guy finally getting his shot and making the most of it with great catch after great catch, yet a TD is erased. Maybe I should be happy, because maybe we'll be able to keep him if he doesn't catch too many TD passes.

But I have to stick to my mantra. Great teams overcome. The 2006 Steelers overcame that horribly officiated game against the Colts. The overturned Polamalu interception was the most memorable gaffe of that game. And I repeat the mantra when people complain about the officiating in SB XL. Great teams overcome.

The Steelers showed us last night that they have the potential to be a great team once again. Not an 8-8 team that sits in mediocrity and smiles as if all is still OK. A great team with great players that will stop at nothing and never give up.

Another thing that great teams do is adjust to overcome. Do you recall Mike Mitchell commenting about how he will now aim at the knees of opposing players? Did you see that last hit he laid on Tolbert? Tolbert now has a hairline fracture in his left leg. We are adjusting and we have guys that are staying aggressive and making the necessary adjustments to drop the guy with the ball quickly. I don't want to see anybody get injured, so don't misunderstand me. I'm just happy to see the defense overcome.

Yes we have have sustained a few major injuries, but it's another opportunity to see just how great this team is - because great teams overcome.
