The Pittsburgh Steelers finally addressed their cornerback needs in the second round, and they did so by drafting Ole Miss CB Senquez Golson in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Golson is a smaller cornerback (5-feet 9-inches) but has exceptional ball skills. This was on full display with his 9 interceptions in the 2014 season for the Rebels of Ole Miss. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine and showed above average strength for a player his size with 15 repetitions on the 225 pound bench press test.
Golson is an above average tackler and doesn't shy away from contact at the line of scrimmage, something which is required of the Steelers' cornerbacks in their 3-4 system. All-in-all, Golson is a solid cornerback who's only real issue entering the NFL is his size and how he can compete against the taller wide receivers he will go against at the pro level.
Golson will be asked to play in primarily nickel and dime situations in 2015 and be matched up against slot receivers. While this isn't a bad plan for Golson, the team will hopefully at one point ask more of a second round draft choice. Golson was projected to be drafted in the 3rd or 4th round, and the Steelers selecting him in the second might be viewed as a stretch to many.
The Steelers had an opportunity, and it was even rumored, to trade up in the draft and get a more desirable defensive back, but decided to stay at No. 56, and as a result they had to settle with Golson.
