The Pittsburgh Steelers donned the pads for the second consecutive practice, and to say their defensive backfield was sporting the substitutes was an understatement. James Harrison continues his work on the side with Will Allen, and after practice head coach Mike Tomlin stated Mike Mitchell is nursing a "minor injury" which won't have him out of practice for the long-term.
Mitchell also missed practice Wednesday, but new to the sideline was cornerback Cortez Allen. Tomlin also said Allen was dealing with a minor injury, and said Allen should be able to participate in the annual Friday night practice at Latrobe High School. Specifics on Mitchel and Allen's injuries were not released.
With the secondary missing the majority of their starters, the cornerbacks were William Gay and Antwon Blake while Doran Grant and B.W. Webb switched off-and-on in the nickel defensive back role, per Neal Coolong of DKonPittsburghSports.com. Coolong also added Robert Golden took Mitchell's place as the starting safety alongside Shamarko Thomas.
B.J. Finney returned to practice after leaving Wednesday early with a heat-related illness, and Ross Ventrone continues to nurse an injured ankle.
The Steelers will practice at Latrobe High School Friday at 7 p.m., and as always, this practice is open to the public.
