Devin Gardner era comes to end. QB/WR released to make room for PK Garrett Hartley. #steelers
— Chris Bradford (@BCTBradford) August 11, 2015
When the news came of Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham being out for the season due to a knee injury, the 90-man roster being juggled was certainly due to happen as the team didn't have another place kicker on their roster.
The Steelers have placed WR/QB Devin Gardner on the waived/injured list to make room for kicker Garrett Hartley. The move ends what was considered a project with Gardner as he played QB primarily in college at Michigan, but in 11 training camp practices didn't take one rep at the quarterback position. Rather, he focused solely on playing wide receiver.
As Hartley now takes over kicking duties for the injured Suisham, he will have to prove his worth throughout the preseason, especially at Heinz Field, to prove to the Steelers organization they don't need to pick up another kicker who might be released by another NFL organization.
Hartley is wearing jersey No. 8 at training camp Tuesday.
