Steelers Secondary Arrested for Impersonating an NFL Team

Well the first week of the season has exposed what we all suspected but didn't want to be true. The Steelers secondary is not made up of NFL caliber players. While William Gay came back to make some plays in this game after being burned early, the rest of the secondary was severely outclassed.

Cortez Allen when he wasn't committing a penalty was getting beat all over the field. Antwon Blake just could not keep up with Julius Edelman (not to mention make a tackle on a running back). Not sure when Robert Golden became our nickel back, but he is no match for Gronk (or any tight end for that matter). We can only shudder at how lost Shamarko Thomas must be not to be able to crack the lineup of this group. One has to wonder that if these were the guys who made the team how bad were the guys they cut?

But lets not lay all of the blame at the feet of the defensive secondary as much as it is warranted. Frankly we didn't get the pressure we needed to on Brady, even with a rookie O-line in front of him. Our linebackers jamming Gronk at the line was either a pre-game bluff or we were really bad at it. The entire defense did not play that well.

Lets also lay some blame on the coaches. The Steelers all too often looked confused on defense, unsure of their coverages, not enough players on the field. They were just beat. We could be in for a long season with this crew.

To be fair the offense should get some blame as well. Scoring 14 points in todays NFL is just not going to win many games. The two missed field goals were obvious, some questionable play calls at key points and of course the usual penalties killed us. DeAngelo Williams played a heck of a game, but I didn't realize he was not our goal line tailback. When did Will Johnson take that job? It cost us two potential TDs. We could have easily put up 30+ points this game which would have overcome all of that lousy defense, but we couldn't convert a lot of yards and chances into points on the scoreboard. We can only hope with Bell and Bryant coming back over the coming weeks, we will convert more drives into scores.

Well we are off to an 0-1 start and the schedule is a tough one. We can only hope that the defense gets better with time, otherwise maybe we will finally draft some DBs that will actually make the team next year.
