The Steelers first round of cuts were announced on August 31 with 13 players losing their jobs. The first to say goodbye to the Black and Gold were:
G Miles Dieffenbach, WR Kenzel Doe, WR C.J. Goodwin, RB Braylon Heard, DE Joe Kruger, DT Joe Okafor, OL Colin Rahrig, CB Jordan Sullen, OT Kevin Whimpy, S Ian Wild, TE Cam Clear, TE Ray Hamilton, and DE Niko Davis.
On Friday it was announced that punter Brad Wing was traded to the Giants in exchange for a late-round draft pick, which would make up for the pick the Steelers parted with to acquire kicker Josh Scobee from the Jaguars. That made Jordan Berry the Steelers punter for the 2015 season.

Running backs Jawon Chisholm and Josh Harris
Defensive linemen Matt Conrath, Ethan Hemer and Mike Thornton
