GAME DAY EATS

Hello Steeler Nation and welcome to my first post. I am posting today on something that is near and dear to me… food! My love of food is only bested by my love of family. It is tied with my love of 80’s hairbands, the Montreal Canadiens and of course our beloved STEELERS.

This post is meant to generate serious (and not so serious) talk about what food you eat on game-day. I am sure that many of you have specific go to items that your family and friends rave about. I hope that this will become an ongoing weekly forum to share with your fellow Steeler fans (and of course the countless trolls that love to hate this site). Give us your secret ingredient for that killer chili, amaze us with your atomic turds recipe, or even grace us with your grandma’s chicken pot pie recipe.

Given that we play the Patriots tomorrow night my theme will be in keeping with the biggest cheaters around. My pregame meal tomorrow night will likely be held in two stages given that I have to drive my daughter across town for practice right after work. So I am going to cheat and make pulled pork quesadilla’s. I will devour one as soon as I get home and then savour the second once we are home just before kick off. Last weekend I smoked a 9 pound pork shoulder. My recipe is pretty simple as I am still learning to smoke J. I brought the shoulder out of the fridge while I prepped the smoker with apple wood and a drip pan half full of apple juice. Once the smoker reached 225 degrees, I dried the shoulder off and put on my dry rub (again I cheated using a local restaurants rub that I buy at Costco). From there I simply put the shoulder into the smoker and let the magic happen. I added more wood ever 90 minutes or so and pulled the drip pan after shoulder reached 165. Once that bad boy reached 192 degrees I pulled it out and let it rest on the counter to cool. After what always seems like forever I shredded it and set the bone aside (which I used to make a smoky broth). Once all the meat and fat (liquid love some might say) is in a rather large container I add bbq sauce and mustard.

For my quesadillas I take a flour tortilla add the leftover pulled pork, tex mex shredded cheese and sauerkraut. I fry the quesadilla in a nonstick fry pan with a quick shot of Pam cooking spray letting the cheese melt into the pork and sauerkraut. I will have a choice of dipping sauces either good old fashion sour cream or another Costco item their Jalapeno Greek yogurt.

There you have it Steeler fans, my pregame meal for tomorrow night. What are you going to have?
