Antonio Brown was attempting to make a reception when, boom!, he was blindsided by Vontaze Burfict who hurtled himself headfirst into the helmet of Antonio Brown, who then fell onto the field limp. The hit was one of many dirty plays Burfict has leveled against opponents this season, and finally the NFL has taken action, announcing that Burfict would be suspended three games.
Merton Hanks, the NFL vice president of football operations leveled the suspension, determining that Burfict's action "placed his opponent at unnecessary risk of injury and should have been avoided,"per NFL.com. Other players may incur discipline for their actions during the heated game between the AFC North rivals, though Burfict flagrant disregard of another players health and personal safety was by far the most egregious and outrageous violation of NFL rules.
The three-game suspension reflects the NFL's frustration with Burfict, who has already paid nearly $70,000 in fines for his on field recklessness. It was Burfict who ended Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell's season in Week 8 after a low hit to his knee. Burfict also kneed Ben Roethlisberger in the shoulder in a play that sent the Steelers quarterback to the locker room with an injury that caused him to miss several plays.
Burfict will serve his suspension at the beginning of the 2016 regular season.
