Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Draft prospect meeting list continues to grow

NCAA Pro Days are slowly coming to a close, and more reports of dinners and meetings with the Steelers and potential prospects continue to grow.

With the 2017 NFL Draft just weeks away, NFL teams are out on the recruiting trail visiting players who they might be interested in adding to the team throughout Draft weekend.

As many commenters on Facebook, BTSC and Twitter have mentioned regarding our prospect meeting articles, “Why is this news? They meet with a lot of players.” Well, the Steelers do meet with a ton of prospects, many of which aren’t reported to the general public, but the fact of who they meet with, as well as those they don’t meet with, can give a glimpse into prospects they are targeting in the draft.

Heading into the weekend, there are a lot of updates with the Steelers and their cross country jaunt with prospects. Take a look at who the team has met with, dined with and are hosting for meetings within the next few weeks.

Wine and Dine

When an NFL team decides to take a player out to dinner, it shows an extra level of interest. This is what the Steelers did with Michigan DL Chris Wormley.

Wormley shined at Michigan’s Pro Day, and it was broken down by DraftAnalyst.com.

Defensive lineman Chris Wormley, who was unable to participate in much of the combine due to a pulled hamstring, looked tremendous today.

Wormley timed in the high-4.7s to low-4.8s in the 40, touched 31.5 inches in the vertical jump and posted a broad jump of 9-foot-2. He then looked good in position drills, easily moving around the field.

I’ve long maintained Wormley deserves first-round consideration and feel he’s much more a three-down defender than Taco Charlton, his higher-rated teammate. General managers on hand say Wormley will be selected early in Round 2.

Since last night, Wormley has met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens. I’m told the Miami Dolphins, who did not meet with Wormley in Ann Arbor, have a lot of interest in his services.

The mix of teams who line up in three- and four-man fronts and met with Wormley is a testament to his versatility.

The Steelers aren’t the only team interested in Wormley, but his versatility has to be something which is intriguing to the Steelers.

While at Michigan’s Pro Day, the Steelers also met with Taco Charleton.

More Quarterbacks

The Steelers continue to look at quarterbacks, and recently they were in attendance at Cal’s Pro Day to take a look at Davis Webb. While it may seem by some scouts he struggled throwing the football, the conditions seemed far from ideal.

I’m told the conditions were miserable for pro day and it rained harder as the workout progressed.

It was an up and down passing day for Davis Webb, though it was no fault of his own. Webb missed on a number of throws but as one person told me they asked him to throw NFL passes in conditions that were impossible. Another source on hand said if these were game time conditions no one would be asked to make those throws.

Webb met with the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers over the past two days.

His official visit list includes the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The last sentence of the report is significant, as the Steelers plan to host Webb on an official pre-draft visit in the coming weeks.

Safety Interest

The Steelers might not need a safety early in the draft, not with Mike Mitchell and Sean Davis both set to be back in the starting spots in 2017, but the team is certainly showing interest in some safeties, especially those with position flexibility.

The most recent safety they have shown interest in is NC State’s Josh Jones.

People seem to dismiss Jones when the conversation turns to the top safeties in the draft, though this is not true in the scouting community. He tested incredibly well at the combine and when teams went back and watched the film, they saw a potential top-50 pick. Jones has worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars and will be working out for the Arizona Cardinals in future. His list of official visits includes the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.

Look for the Steelers to bring in the safety for an official pre-draft visit in the coming weeks.

...

The Steelers are leaving no stones unturned when it comes to the upcoming draft. There truly isn’t any position the team isn’t showing interest in, which makes this entire process even more interesting, and fun.
