Steelers Injury Report: Trio of starters fail to practice Wednesday

New, comments

The Pittsburgh Steelers were back to work on Wednesday preparing for the Detroit Lions, and three starters didn’t practice for different reasons.

Wednesdays mean it was back to work for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as they prepare for a trip to Ford Field in Week 8. As the players put the Bengals game behind them, a new set of concerns crops up every week when it comes to reported practice participation.

First, the good news. Rookie receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster reported concussion-like symptoms after Sunday’s game at Heinz Field (which doesn’t necessarily mean he actually suffered a concussion) and he was placed in the NFL’s strict concussion protocol. But Smith-Schuster was a full participant in practice today—a tremendous step in the right direction for the former USC wideout. If Smith-Schuster doesn’t experience any further symptoms and is also a full participant on Thursday, he should be well on his way to getting back onto the field.

In not-so-good news, Marcus Gilbert (hamstring), Vance McDonald (knee) and Stephon Tuitt (back) didn’t practice. While this doesn’t necessarily mean the trio of players won’t be playing in Detroit this Sunday, it certainly isn’t starting the week off on the right foot. If none of the aforementioned players suit up on Thursday, there’s a good chance they’ll all be sitting out the last game prior to the team’s bye-week in Week 9.

As for Detroit, coming off of their own bye-week, a pair of tackles missed practice, which could mean great news for a Steelers’ pass rush ranking second in the NFL in sacks.

Stay tuned to BTSC for the latest on these injuries and more leading up to the Week-8 game on Sunday Night Football.
