The Pittsburgh Steelers lost in Week 3 of the NFL preseason, but they most importantly left the game without any injuries to key players.

Call it what you want. “Final dress rehearsal” or what not, but Week 3 in the NFL preseason is the biggest event of the four preseason games. While fans want to see the starters, in limited action, light up the scoreboard, the ultimate goal of every team at this phase of the meaningless games should be to stay healthy.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were successful in this regard, as Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, Ryan Shazier and company all left the game unscathed and unharmed. The only injury of note was to running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, who was categorized as out with a leg injury. Mike Tomlin specified the injury as a “contusion of some kind” in his post-game comments.

The injury to Toussaint certainly makes the battle at the running back position interesting, especially with Terrell Watson and James Conner playing so well. It could be a battle with Knile Davis and Watson to make the team, assuming Toussaint is healthy enough to compete in the final preseason game.

Pittsburgh will conclude their preseason schedule Thursday when they travel to Charlotte, NC to play the Carolina Panthers. After the game the team will have to trim their 90-man roster down to 53, and select 10 players to be on their practice squad.

Stay tuned to BTSC for the latest on the black and gold as they wrap up their preseason play.
