2017 NFL Draft: Steelers continue their cross country focus on NCAA Pro Days

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ coaching staff is spread across the country visiting prospects near and far before the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been busy. Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert have been to Wisconsin, Auburn and other schools taking a good look at several prospects before the 2017 NFL Draft. However, it isn’t just Tomlin and Colbert on the beaten path, but the entire scouting department and coaching staff.

Over the past few days, the organization has had representatives all over looking at prospects. We have condensed the news in one easy-to-read article.

Pitt Pro Day

The Steelers were clearly present for the University of Pittsburgh’s Pro Day. After all, they do share a facility. Check out who went over to the Pro Day, and prospects they could be interested in.

Peterman is a sought after prospect, but will be meeting with the Steelers next month for a pre-draft visit.

UConn Safety Obi Melifonwu

Speaking of pre-draft visits, the Steelers are reportedly planning one with dynamic hybrid safety Obi Melifonwu from UConn.

On top of that, the Steelers were one of many who attended UConn’s Pro Day, likely to get an up-close-and-personal look at Melifonwu. The question now remains what the team would do if Melifonwu is on the board when Pittsburgh picks 30th in Round 1?

Pass Rusher Prospect Meeting

It is being reported the Steelers are going to set up a pre-draft visit with hard working pass rusher Takk McKinley, but they aren’t alone. The Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions are also showing interest in the UCLA product. Many have projected McKinley to the Steelers in their weekly mock drafts, not that it means anything.

UNC Quarterback

The University of North Carolina held their Pro Day recently, and the Steelers were clearly in attendance. One specific position coach was there, and that would be quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner. The photo below was taken of Fichtner talking with UNC quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The Steelers typically do their diligence with prospect quarterbacks, but Fichtner being present could show the Steelers are more serious about this quarterback class than originally thought.
