2018 NFL Draft: Analyzing who the experts are predicting the Steelers to pick in the first round

New, comments

The “experts” seem to have it all figured out. We check in on who they are predicting as the Steelers’ first pick in the upcoming draft.

NCAA Football: Western Kentucky at Alabama Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

As we steam towards the 2018 NFL Draft, analysts have been churning out mock draft after mock draft. Every week, the Steelers are projected to draft a different player. But a lot of things have to happen before the Steelers pick 28th — if they even pick there at all (cue the ominous music).

So who do the “experts” expect the Steelers to take? Below are names that have been closely linked with the Steelers’ selection. Note: mock trades will not be considered

Rashaan Evans, Alabama

-Mel Kiper 1.0

The original favorite to be the Steelers’ selection has seen his draft stock rise a bit. If Evans is still available, the Steelers’ front office will likely run up to the podium.

Leighton Vander Esch, Boise State

-Mel Kiper 2.0

-Daniel Jeremiah 2.0

Vander Esch has become the most mocked draft player at the Steelers’ selection position. The tall, long, athletic linebacker might very likely be suiting up for the Black-and-gold in 2018.

Malik Jefferson, Texas

Undersized but flies to the ball. He could be a force if he adds some mass.

Defensive backs:

Ronnie Harrison, Alabama

-Lance Zierlein 1.0 & 2.0

If the Steelers go secondary in the first round, Harrison will likely be the guy.

Donte Jackson, LSU

-Daniel Jeremiah 1.0

Possibly the least likely of the mocked Steelers’ picks. The Steelers have too much money and recent draft picks invested at the corner position to go corner this high.

Jaire Alexander, Louisville

-CBS Sports

If the Steelers want to shock their fan base, they could certainly do it by selecting this player.

Running backs:

Derrius Guice, LSU

-Charles Davis

-Charley Casserly

-Bucky Brooks

Another popular name. If talks with Le’Veon Bell start to fizzle out, the Steelers might be thinking Guice could be the man of the future.

Sony Michel, Georgia

-Chad Reuter

Michel looks like a second-round prospect. If he slides into the first round, that probably means an early flurry of running backs were selected.

Lamar Jackson, Quarterback, Louisville

-CBS Sports

I really don't think the Steelers go QB in the first round unless they fall in love with this kid. Freak athlete, slash 2.0.

Hayden Hurst, Tight end, South Carolina

-Todd McShay

Steelers nation will collectively throw up if the Steelers go tight end in the first round because there are so many other needs.

With free agency and Pro-days still to come, many more mock drafts are on the horizon. This list will be updated closer to the draft.
