With the Pittsburgh Steelers 2017 season officially in the books, the team begins their offseason operations by signing current players to new contracts. Many of these players were on the team’s practice squad, and were signed to reserve/future contracts, while some might get a brand-new deal from the team.
A total of 7 contracts were handed out almost 24 hours after the Steelers’ season ended at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and there could be more contracts being dished out in the coming days.
Here is a list of the players signed, and what kind of contract they received:
TE Xavier Grimble — One-year contract
LS Kameron Canaday — One-year contract
Canaday and Grimble were exclusive-rights free agents, which means the Steelers held their rights and overall control of whether they matched an offer from another team.
The following players were all signed to reserve/future contracts:
LB Matt Galambos
S Jordan Dangerfield
CB Farrington HugueninJ
TE Jake McGee
CB Dashaun Phillips
The NFL offseason roster can be up to 90-players deep, and the Steelers will fill out all 90 possible vacancies this offseason. For those who think some of these players being brought in are just camp bodies, you should remember Mike Hilton was one of those players entering the 2017 season. He went from camp body to starter after a solid training camp and preseason.
