Pittsburgh Steelers Free Agency Recap: Another day, another non news day for the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers had another slow news day in Free Agency...nothing new here.

NFL: Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The official NFL Free Agency period is officially two days old, and the Pittsburgh Steelers have made four transactions.

They have released Mike Mitchell, Robert Golden and William Gay, and on Thursday re-signed running back Fitzgerald Toussaint.

This is where I want to focus today.

What does Toussaint’s contract mean to the team?

Not much.

Toussaint does know the offense, and have a rapport with the coaching staff and players, but he is also a player who didn’t make the opening day roster over Terrell Watson. If anyone is projecting the Steelers signing Toussaint means the Steelers won’t continue to search for running backs, primarily in the NFL Draft, reach over and smack them in the back of the head.

Let’s take a look at the Steelers running back depth chart:

Le’Veon Bell
James Conner
Fitzgerald Toussaint
Roosevelt Nix (FB)
James Summers

The last player on this list doesn’t even have a number on the team’s official roster. In other words, the team will need to add some quality depth at the running back position. You may be wondering why the team even signed Toussaint if he isn’t a lock to make the team? He is a safety net. Again, he knows the system, is versatile by playing special teams, and would be a good No. 3 back if needed.

That’s it.

Therefore, even though the team did bring back Fitzgerald Toussaint it doesn’t mean they won’t be looking at running back through other avenues this offseason.

What can fans expect on Day 3 of free agency? This is typically when the Steelers might release another player(s), or announce they have re-signed one of their own free agents. Rumors may swirl, but the team is rarely busy bringing in outside free agents this early in the process. Rather, they sit back and let other teams jump at the first wave of free agents, and the Steelers will go after a few prospects in the second wave.
