The Pittsburgh Steelers laid low throughout the initial wave of NFL Free Agency, but made some moves in the wake of the frenzy for athletes looking for a new home.
Here are the moves the Steelers made this offseason:
Franchise Tag RB Le’Veon Bell
Re-signed RB Fitzgerald Toussaint to one-year deal
Sign FA ILB Jon Bostic to two-year deal
Sign FA S Morgan Burnett to three-year deal
Re-signed DT Daniel McCullers to one-year deal
No blockbuster moves, but this is what Steelers fans should become accustomed to with Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert at the helm.
It makes you think about what grade you would give the team for their activity, or lack thereof, throughout free agency.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN gave his own personal grade on the Steelers’ most recent transactions. See what he said:
Overall grade: B-plus
The Steelers entered free agency with minimal cap space and still got two starters to fill defensive needs, each for less than $7 million per year -- a classic navigation of free agency’s second wave. They also released three veteran defensive backs to signal improvements are coming. But staying away from the top inside linebackers could hurt the defense if the Steelers don’t get the right player in the draft.
When I look at what the Steelers have done, addressing the positions of need and doing so with their extremely limited cap space — I am amazed. It would be foolish of me to just gloss over the team manipulating the salary cap with ease the way they have for so many years. To me, this offseason has been amazing to watch, even though there haven’t been a ton of fireworks.
All things considered, I give the Steelers a very good grade. They did what they could, and improved their roster. Kudos to the front office for this one.
Overall Grade: A
