Steelers to debut ‘Block Number’ throwback uniforms Sunday vs. the Browns

Steelers Nation has been clamoring for it for years, and it finally returns this Sunday. BLOCK NUMBERS!

The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base has been very vocal about their displeasure with the current uniforms. However, if you were an alien visiting this planet for the first time, and studied the Steelers’ jersey history you would suggest there hasn’t hardly been any change in the last 25 years.

Oh, but when you ask any black-and-gold blooded fan, they will look at you and say, “But those numbers!! Bring back the block numbers!!”

The late Dan Rooney chose to change the jersey numbers to match the numbers on the team’s helmets in 1997, and added the team’s logo to the left chest of the jersey.

If you hated the change, and long for the classic block numbers of the 1970s, then you will enjoy watching the Steelers host the Cleveland Browns in Week 8 at Heinz Field, when the team will wear their new throwback uniforms.

Check out the video, in case you forgot:

I have to wonder if the Steelers might follow the lead of the Pittsburgh Penguins and their jersey changes over the past few years. When the Penguins went from the classic Pittsburgh black and gold, and to the black and vegas gold, the reception from the fan base was lukewarm, to say the least. Two years ago, the organization decided to go back to the Mario Lemieux uniforms, with the traditional Pittsburgh colors.

Fans went crazy for them. How did the Penguins respond? They wore the throwback jerseys at home during the playoffs, and the following year made them their everyday uniforms.

To say fans were happy is an understatement.

Could the Steelers follow suit and eventually go back to the block numbers as many fans have been asking for? In the NFL it is all about dollar bills. If the Steelers, Nike and the NFL think the transition back to the old school style would equate to more money, the move could be made, but if I were a betting man I would suggest the Steelers will inject the uniforms here and there to have the best of both worlds.

Do you want the block numbers back for good? Or are you okay with the uniforms the way they are? Let us know in the comment section below!
