Steelers address need at wide receiver, but still plenty of work to do in Round 3

The Pittsburgh Steelers have added a big play wide receiver to their roster, but their next two picks in the third round will be huge.

NFL: NFL Draft Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to address a huge need in the second round when they selected wide receiver James Washington out of Oklahoma State with their second round pick. After the team shipped Martavis Bryant to the Oakland Raiders prior to their first round pick, it left their receiving corps decimated.

Although the Steelers were going to try and utilize the third round pick gained by the Raiders to trade up in the first round, when they were unable to do so the need for receiver became huge. Washington fills the big play receiver role vacated by Bryant, but there are still huge needs left to be filled.

Those two 3rd round picks will loom large when the team looks to fill a huge hole on defense at inside linebacker. But it goes beyond the inside linebacker.

The Steelers could target the following positions in the third round:

  • ILB
  • Free Safety
  • Running Back
  • Tight End
  • Offensive Line
  • Wide Receiver (4th receiver/returner)
  • Defensive Line

So, what will the team do with their first third round pick? After their selection of Terrell Edmunds, anything is possible. The team could possibly target Josh Sweat, pass rusher, from Florida State, or they could take a running back to help fill out their depth chart at the position.

Trying to predict these type of things is nothing more than a crap shoot, but one fact which remains — these two picks can make or break the draft for the 2018 season. Can they find some diamonds in the rough, or swing and miss at a crucial juncture of the selection process?
