Entering the 2018 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a number of draft needs which they needed to address. Inside linebacker, safety, running back, wide receiver and even quarterback were positions of need to help the black and gold get to the next level in 2018. There have been numerous thoughts and debates regarding what the team will do with their Day 1 and 2 selections.

With the 28th overall draft pick the team added Terrell Edmunds, a safety from Virginia Tech, in the second round the Steelers added wide receiver James Washington, but there is more talent to be acquired. With their first pick in the third round, the team added the player who threw Washington passes, quarterback Mason Rudolph. Their final pick of the third round was offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor.

The Steelers have selected safety Marcus Allen out of Penn State with their first of two picks in the fifth round of the draft.

Allen is the second safety the Steelers have taken throughout the first 5 rounds, but Allen is only the second defender the team has taken.

If you don’t know much about Allen, this is from his official NFL Scouting Report:

Allen is a punishing, downhill banger with good size and the attitude of a linebacker in run support. He’s a little limited in terms of his lateral movement and agility and is at his best when allowed to flow downhill. Tape appears to show a lack of long speed and his forty time seems to back that up. Allen’s game is a little limited, but he has the toughness and tackle production of a future starter who does his best work near the line of scrimmage.

Allen, who is considered a strong safety, adds to a long line of safeties the Steelers have put together after releasing Mike Mitchell and Robert Golden when the 2018 league year began.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ draft needs in the remaining rounds of the draft now would be considered: running back, cornerback and absolutely inside linebacker, among other positions.
